The Joy and Pain of Chapter Titles Mary Strouse ILUG July 25, 2009
“End users rely on and expect enhanced content including summaries/abstracts and tables of contents.” -- Executive Summary “Search results must be relevant and the relevance must be obvious.” -- Key Findings Online Catalogs : What Users and Librarians Want (OCLC 2009) http://www.oclc.org/reports/onlinecatalogs/summary.htm
Identifying Which Books Have Tables of Contents • No contents signal in Webpac • Record browse format (Classic/Pro) ex.1 • Brief citation format (Classic/Pro) ex.2 • Contents signal in Encore ex.3A & ex.3B • Vendor format (970) only • Appears only if table of contents is present
Keyword Searches (Webpac) • Result always a list of book titles • Brief Citation ex.4 • Record Browse (Classic) ex.5 • Sorting • Open keyword -- RightResult • weights words in main title, direct order ex.6 • Keyword in title, etc. – default sort ex.7 • Chapter titles only if indexed in title ex.8 • Terms not limited to a single chapterex.9A • (use near search to refine) ex.9B
Keyword Searches (Encore) • Result always a list of book titles ex.10 • Sorted by relevance (default) ex.11 • Begins as an open keyword search • Use search results facet to limit to title, etc. ex.12 • Search terms not limited to a single chapter ex.13A • (refine by tag cloud) ex.13B
Title Searches • Chapter titles included in search results • Requires 505 |t and/or 970 |t indexed in title • Introduction, etc. can be excluded (using 970 second indicator) • Initial articles automatically ignored • Chapter titles not identified in results • Display of book vs. chapter title inconsistent • Index browse - controlled by browse or browse_t • record browse (system-sorted) – controlled by browse_t • Custom sorts and limits – controlled by briefcit.html
Which Title Displays? When search matches multiple index entries • Default display = index browse (system sorted) • Indexed title displays ex.14Aex.15A • May be book title, alternate title, analytic entry, or contents (970/505 |t) • Source of title (book/chapter) not indicated • Not affected by Display_245 • Display of 970 subfields controlled by browse_t • Limiting/Sorting switches to record browse (brief citation) ex.14B & ex.15B
Which Title Displays? When • Search matches single index entry, or • User selects single entry from index, or • Results limited/sorted in any way Display format is • Record browse (Classic) ex.16 • Display_245 operative • Display of 970 subfields controlled by browse_t • Brief citation (Pro/Classic) ex.17 • Display of 970 subfields controlled by Fieldspec:vbt in briefcit.html Book title, not indexed title, displays • Apparent duplicate entries ex.18A & ex.18B
But Wait! The Chapter Title Option In briefcit.html, if fieldspec:vbT, both indexed (chapter) and book title are shown ex.19 • Only applies to title index searches • Affects all variant/analytic titles ex.20 • Browse_t controls indexed title display • Loss of control over subfields fieldspec:vbT245abhnpl the same as fieldspec:vbT #105894, #107034
Author Searches • Chapter authors can be indexed • Requires 970 |f (personal names) indexed in author • Does not apply to 505 |r • 970 |d (corporate author) and |e (editor) contain mixed authorized/unauthorized forms • Chapter titles not identified in results ex.21 • Chapter, not book title displays regardless of sort/limit ex.22 • Chapter title option (Fieldspc:vbT) does not apply
Email/Download Issues When record is emailed or downloaded: • Contents (505) included only if defined in export format (endnote, procite, etc.) • Contents (970) fields suppressed to protect vendor data • No contents signal/link back to full record in brief export format Relevance of results to search may be lost
Recommendations: Display • Identify chapter titles in index browse • Extend fieldspec:vbT or similar option to author and keyword search results • Honor 245 subfields specified in fieldspec=vbT • Add contents signal to brief citation with link to full TOC display (a la Encore)
Recommendations: Download • Allow export of chapter titles from limited number of records for legitimate individual scholarly use • Contents signal/link back to full TOC in brief export format • Customizable message informing user that table of contents will not be downloaded
