History • The Hispanic Scholarship Fund (HSF) is the nation's leading organization supporting Hispanic higher education. • Founded in 1975, HSF's vision is to strengthen the country by advancing college education among Hispanic Americans.
Achievements • HSF provides the Latino community more college scholarships and educational outreach support than any other organization in the country. • During the 2007-2008 academic year, HSF awarded nearly 4,100 scholarships exceeding $26.6 million. • In its 33-year history, HSF has awarded more than 86,000 scholarships worth more than $247 million to Latinos from all 50 states, Puerto Rico, Guam and the U.S. Virgin Islands attending nearly 2,000 colleges and universities.
Eligibility Requirements • Be a U.S. Citizen or legal permanent resident • Have a minimum GPA of 3.0 (cumulative) • Must apply for federal financial aid using the FAFSA • Have plans to enroll FULL-TIME in a degree seeking program at a U.S. accredited institution in the Fall of 2009
How to Apply • Visit WWW.HSF.NET • Click on “Apply Online Now!” • Click “Register Now” and fill out Registration Information page • Check email for message from scholarshipdepartment@hsf.net • Return to WWW.HSF.NET to fill out the Universal Application • Complete the HSF General Application and co-branded applications, if offered
Universal Application Academic and Personal Information • Work experience and volunteer activities • Degree(s) earned • Current and intended institution • Current and intended major(s) • GPA and number of units completed • Recommender’s name, email address and relationship to the student
HSF General Application Most scholarship applicants must fill out the General Application • Applicants fill out 3 essay questions • Responses are between 400-600 words • Topics include “My Hispanic Heritage,” “Contributing to my Community,” & “Overcoming an Academic Challenge”
Co-Branded Programs • After submitting out the General Application, applicants may be eligible for other programs. • Additional information may be required. • Some programs require a resume to determine potential for an internship.
Letter of Recommendation • After the student submits their Universal Application, the recommender is contacted by HSF via email. • Recommender must evaluate the student in 5 areas, state the nature of their relationship, and give an overall recommendation for the student. • Recommendation must be submitted electronically by the posted deadline (may differ from application deadline).
Required Documents POSTMARKED BY THE LISTED DEADLINE: • Student Aid Report (SAR) (from the FAFSA) • Official transcript • Proof of residency (for permanent residents) SUBMITTED AFTER BEING SELECTED: • Enrollment Verification Form
