Look! • 1.) Legislative (Article I), Executive (Article 2), and Judicial (Article 3). • 2.) Checks and balances prohibits one branch of government from becoming too powerful. Ex: President appoints members of the Supreme Court – Senate confirms the Presidential appointment. Ex2: Supreme Court can declare a law unconstitutional. • 3.) Majority Opinion – announces the courts decision on a case and provides the reasons for that decision. • Concurrent Opinion – adds or emphasizes a point that was not made by the majority. • Dissenting Opinion – written by the justices who did not agree with the courts decision. • Original Jurisdiction – where the case originates. • Appellate Jurisdiction – courts that hear cases on appeal.
Trees! • 4.) There are 9 members on the Supreme Court (Congress can actually change this number). • 5.) Members of the Supreme Court are appointed for life given good behavior. Members of the Supreme Court can actually be impeached. A member of the Supreme Court can far outlast their time on the bench than the President who appointed them. (Scalia – appointed in 1986, Reagan finished his term in 1988). Justice Scalia, the most conservative member of the Supreme Court is still rendering decisions. • 6.)
