  6. Writing Learning Outcomes UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA DIVISION OF STUDENT AFFAIRS What are learning outcomes? Learning outcomes are statements that specify what learners will know or be able to DO as a result of a learning activity. The key word is DO and the need in drafting learning outcomes are active verbs. Outcomes describe a desired condition such as knowledge, skills, or attitudes that need to be fulfilled. What are the characteristics of good learning outcomes? Three characteristics of learning outcomes 1. The specified action by the learners must be observable. 2. The specified action by the learners must be measurable. 3. The specified action must be done by the learners. An ultimate test when writing a learning outcome is whether or not the action taken by the participants can be assessed. If not, the outcome probably does not meet all three characteristics. 1. who is to perform; 2. what action they are to take; 3. some result that must come from their action.

  7. How do you fix an unclear outcome? If you can ask the simple question (“Can it be measured?”), you will discover that learning outcomes have shortcomings. Some outcomes may not be measurable. Example #1 • Unclear learning outcome: Students will understand three main reasons for participating in volunteerism • Clear learning outcome: Students will list three reasons for participating in volunteer opportunities. Example #2 • Unclear learning outcome: Students will develop an appreciation of cultural diversity in the L.A. area. Clear learning outcome: Students will summarize in writing their feelings about cultural diversity in the L.A. area.

Departmental Objective 2011-12 Residence Life Complete results will not be available until fall and spring as indicated based on the timeframes of the goals, new increased efforts to overfill are in progress now in an effort to reach the capacity goals later. Below are the current changes in progress and enabling activities University Objective: 2.12 Increase the ratio of full-time to part-time student • Increase available on-campus housing Departmental Objectives: • Increase fall and spring occupancy in residence halls • Increase number of incoming freshman in residence halls Assessment Tool: • Admissions data and Banner Hyperion reports from the housing module Baseline: • Fall 2011 paying bed occupancy was 96%; spring 2012 occupancy was 91% • Fall 2011 - 803 (62%) of overall freshmen live on-campus; this is (37%) of 2142; all students housed on-campus. • Fall 2012- spring 2013 Goal:  • Increase housing to 98% capacity for fall 2012, and 95% for spring 2013; to maintain revenue to sustain all housing, facilitates and meal plan functions financially. • Increase housing to freshmen by 3 % (with existing housing) to increase new students attending the university; bringing the total number of freshman housed from 37% to 40% Progress: • Kept housing offers at guaranteed status until after May 1st to capture more new students earlier on to develop confidence and serious interest in depositing to C.C.S.U. • Staff was able to offer and secure deposits for 850 new students by May 21, which is up by 202 from last year at this time Enabling Activities: • Occupancy rates fall and spring • Continue to work with campus departments that have an impact on changes in student housing status that contribute to occupancy loss, such as delinquent payments, financial aid, and academic issues(Currently have had planning meetings with Enrollment Management Team and campus partners to discuss change) Automate and streamline housing application process so that it is on-line and equitable with the Admissions application process; to avoid lag time and loss. • Housing freshman • Increase the number of freshman we confirm by double booking another 22% in order to sustain all beds during melt periods due to the issues stated above   • Hold all continuing students to the July deadline, as we free up space from continuing students, spaces will go to freshman
