Hydrogen Resources Study Literature Search and Bibliography Status of HIA Task 18 Analysis Effort 27 May 2009
IEA HIA - Background • Analysis to answer the question “Where will the Hydrogen come from?” dates back to 2003 (IEA Hydrogen Coordinating Group) • Framework by Cathy Padro (LANL), at DOE request • Input from Task 18 on costs and performance • Overtaken by IEA “Prospects for Fuel Cells and Hydrogen” study • Renewed approach 2008 beginning with HIA Analysis Committee (constituted by ExCo members); meeting March 2008 in Paris; (conference call early 2009) • Reviewed objectives and previous work • Outlined overall study • First step: literature search and annotated bibliography; Task 18 experts agreed
Status of Task 18 Study Effort • Task 18 Experts have provided bibliographies of 29 study documents, in response to formal request • Contents sorted into database constructed by Emma Stewart, Task 18 expert and former SNL researcher • Assessment to discover trends and gaps (Susan and Emma) • Report in progress
Hydrogen Resource Study: Literature Search and Bibliography - Request to Task 18 Experts • “Quantitative analyses, evaluations or projections of future hydrogen supply for usage in transportation or power systems (of all sizes) in a hydrogen-inclusive economy” • Major projects, programs or reports - definitive, comprehensive works - referenced by governments or prepared by government agencies • Questions: • Identify studies • Provide a bibliography • List characteristics and assumptions • Summarize key findings How to Implement • a) Confirm who is willing to make a contribution. One contribution per person is reasonable, unless motivated to provide more. • b) Set a 1 month due date. Draft would be due 17 Oct. • c) Use questions 1-4 above. • After review, take preliminary results to ExCo meeting (5-7 Nov.). e) Final bibliography by end of year: 31 Dec. 2008

Trends and Gaps • Trends seen in studies examined to date: • Analysis focused on regional sources to meet regional demands for (light duty) transportation • European studies motivated by environmental considerations; Others by energy security • Wide range of time frames and assumptions • Gaps in studies examined to date: • Missing a large part of the world • Carbon calculations (mostly) missing from explicit models • No global cross-talk
Recommendations • Literature Analysis • Continue / complete assessment of current set of bibliographies • Complete report • Determine additional/new studies to be examined • Task 18 suggestions • Involve other HIA Tasks • Involve external Implementing Agreements and activities • DOE participation in definition of new HIA task • Choose appropriate studies for detailed evaluation • Focus on global impacts / scarce resources • Emphasis on CO2 and petroleum reductions
North America US / Canada Asia Europe Global Impacts: What flows between nations? • Potential flows: • Hydrogen • NG, LNG, coal • Pt, other materials • Machinery/components • Expertise • etc • Study components: • Hydrogen demand • Hydrogen sources • GHG reductions • Petroleum reductions • Global hydrogen infrastructure • Australia • China • India • Russia • Missing Continents/regions • Africa • South America • Central America
