    2. What is Poetry? A form of writing that allows for a wide variety of personal expression The beauty of language makes writing an art form and attracts readers Content is expressed through voice, form, and theme A variety of poetic forms allows for freedom of expression

A major type of literature There is no single, unique characteristic that poetry shares Poetry does not always rhyme or have rhythm The elements of poetry include figurative language, imagery, voice, sound devices, structure, symbolism, and theme An anthology is a collection of poems or stories, usually written by a variety of authors

    17. Music is poetry…… A lot of music is written from poetry Musical artists get their inspiration from poetry Some music is written from historical events or poems The lyrics to music are a form of poetry If you love music you should love poetry

    18. Questions…… What is the song/poem about? What does the title have to do with the song? What three poetic sound devices (onomatopoeia, alliteration, etc) can you find in the lyrics? What two figurative devices (metaphor, simile, etc) can you find in the lyrics? If it’s a song are the lyrics written as lines of poetry?

Elements of Poetry Figurative Language- displays the imaginative and poetic use of words; writing that contains figures of speech such as simile, metaphor, and personification Imagery- figurative language and descriptions used to produce mental images Voice- an expression of a writer’s personality through such stylistic elements as word choice or tone Sound devices- assonance, consonance, alliteration, onomatopoeia- known as musical devices that make poetry an art form Structure –Types of poetry (to be looked at later) Symbolism –representing things by means of symbolic meaning to objects, events, or relationships Theme –the central idea or messenger of a work of literature

After you have collected enough details, look for a powerful image to use as the main focus of your poem Write freely Don’t overlook the senses Free verse poems can take any form Make sure your thoughts are complete Make sure they convey feelings you want to convey Make sure you have used the best words and images to describe the subject Does the title add meaning to the poem

    38. Structure ~ Limerick A limerick is a humorous verse of 5 lines. Lines 1, 2, and 5 have 3 stressed syllables; Lines 3 and 4 have two stressed syllables.     43. Three Word Form Poems Each line of this form is made up of three words. The last two words become the first two words in the next line. In the poem, there will be a progress of images and a story will be told. This is a poetry form that emphasizes the repetitive nature of the thing described. Notice the title of the first poem is “Mornings” because it happens the same way every morning. There is a 12 line minimum, and it needs a Title
