  1. Good Evening Thank you for your interest in Hillcrest Cheerleading!

  2. The Hillcrest Cheerleading Vision: Commitment Sacrifice Maturity

  3. Commitment: The average week in the life of an HHS Cheerleader: Based on Varsity Schedule Monday- Practice 4-6 Tuesday- Practice at Rockstar 6:30-8:30 Wednesday- Tumbling Class Thursday- Practice 4-6 Friday- Game time! Go Rams! 6-10 Saturday- On the bus by 9am for Competition. Get home usually by 6.

  4. Sacrifice Sacrifice is not just about time. It’s about consciously being aware of your choices and how they will affect not only you, but your teammates as well. How will your decisions, behavior, words, reflect upon the program?

  5. Maturity It’s all about choices!! “With great power, comes great responsibility.”

  6. The Role of a Cheerleader: Being a Hillcrest High Cheerleader is an honor and a privilege, not a right!!! Therefore, the following must be met and maintained: • Represent the school to the highest degree • Must set an example of good behavior • Must maintain sportsman like conduct in and out of uniform • Provide leadership • Emotional maturity • Self-confidence • Moral and Ethical values • Cooperation • Character • Self-Discipline • Self-Control

  7. Academic Requirements: STUDENT Athlete • HHS Cheerleading will follow all guidelines of the South Carolina High School League (SCHSL). According to the SCHSL, athletes must maintain an overall GPA of 1.0. If at any time a cheerleader drops below this GPA or receives an F in a subject, she will be dropped from the squad. • Each cheerleader must show official grades to the coach within two days of issue. Failure to present grades to coach will result in suspension until the obligation is met. “If you can’t make an A, make a B. If you can’t make a B, try harder.”

  8. Summer Practices If your child is a world traveler in the summer, than competitive cheer at Hillcrest is probably not for him/her. Our teams are made in the summer. Average summer schedule: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday. We often do team bonding activities during the summer as well. We understand people go on vacations, but if your child goes on extended vacations, (more than a week at a time) Cheer might not be for them.

  9. Missing Practices: All cheerleaders are expected to attend all practices. TENTATIVE practice schedules will be given to each cheerleader every month. If you are sick and unable to attend practice, you must contact the coach via telephone/email as soon as possible. If you are sick, a doctor’s note needs to be given to your coach to be considered “excused”. Don’t say you’re sick and then post pictures on instagram at the lake! It will not fair well for you.

  10. ALL CHEERLEADERS MUST COME TO PRACTICE ON TIME AND STAY UNTIL DISMISSED BY THE COACH. Excessive tardiness, leaving early, and absences, may result in being sat or removed from the squad.

  11. Participating in multiple activities… If you participate in band, chorus, strings, or any other organized school program, we must know ASAP of your concert/ presentation dates. Many related arts teachers know at the beginning of the semester what their concert dates will be. PLEASE relay these dates to your coaches. This is the responsibility of EACH INDIVIDUAL CHEERLEADER. DATES MUST BE IN WRITING. Suzi cannot relay to Coach that Tina, Jessica, and Margaret have a concert. The coach needs to be notified individually. PLEASE try to schedule all appointments on days when practice starts later (i.e. Rockstar/ Carolina practices) or Wednesdays, as we generally will not have practice on this day.

  12. Cheer Season: Try outs-April Practice begins late April, early May Summer practices- June-August (last week of July is dead week, no practice) JV and Varsity Competitive teams have routine camp June- July Competition season begins September, runs through November Football season- August- October Basketball season- December- February

  13. Breakdown of teams… C-team, JV, Varsity

  14. C-team: Grades 7th-9th Coach Brittney Reid Our c-team will consist of 10- 20 girls who will train and learn basic skills (motions, tumbling, stunting) to help them get to the competitive level. Our c-team exists to feed into our competitive teams. They will not compete during their c-team years, but the whole purpose is to get them there. They will be required to attend weekly tumbling classes and cheer at HOME football and basketball games.

  15. Junior Varsity: 7th- 11th Coach Danette Gaines Our JV competitive team will consist of 20-24 girls who will train to compete on the JV level. They will attend weekly routine classes at Carolina, weekly competitive practices at HHS, and cheer at HOME football and basketball games. Please note that we will take up to 24 girls but may compete only 20 girls. This will be decided upon athlete’s performance and coaches’ judgment. If a girl is not put into the routine, their routine fee money will go towards their next payment.

  16. Varsity: 7th- 12th Coach Lindsey Chambers Our varsity competitive team will consist of up to 28 girls who will train to compete on the varsity level. They will attend weekly routine classes at Rock Star, competitive practices at HHS, and cheer at home/away football, basketball games. Depending upon our final roster, up to 4 girls will have off a game. This will depend upon basis (i.e. family events, personal events) and game. Between 20 and 24 girls will compete. Who takes the mat will be decided upon by athlete’s performance, skill, coaches judgment, and commitment.

  17. New changes for Varsity… I will take up to 28 members on Varsity. Only 24, per SCHSL, may take the competition floor. The 28 who make Varsity will compete for their spot on the competition floor. All 28 will cheer at games. Those who do not compete, will still be treated as equals on the team. They are still vital members!! If someone gets hurt, we will pull from this group of girls/boys to fill the injured/ suspended/ no longer with us spot.

  18. When will I know If I am taking the competition floor? Varsity routine camp is June 27-29. I will announce who will be competing at Thursday practice, June 19th. This will be done tastefully and not in a way to make any girl feel neglected, or embarrassed. Consistency is the key. Athletes who fail to perform (classroom, practice, etc.) may have their spot taken. **HARD WORK NEVER STOPS**

  19. How this will not work… We will not rotate girls in and out for competitions.

  20. How will HHS Cheerleading be changing over the next couple of years? **Heads up to parents and cheerleaders** We will begin this initiative this year, meaning, we will most likely have an all tumbling Varsity squad this season. 2017-2018 Season Required skill for Varsity: Standing back tuck or higher Required skill for JV Competitive: Standing back handspring or higher

  21. What will tryouts be like? Tryouts will be led by coaches and senior cheerleaders from last year’s team. All candidates will be required to do the following: *Learn a sideline cheer * Learn a chant * Learn a dance (Usually about 45seconds to 1 minute) *Run a mile in under 10 minutes *Demonstrate two jump skills (toe-touch, double toe, herky, hurdler, pike)

  22. IMPORTANT!!! If your child suffers from asthma or has another severe allergy that requires an epi-pen, or something similar, it is VITAL they have those items on them at ALL TIMES DURING TRY OUTS. **We prefer you put their medical items in a plastic baggy with their name, that they will daily give the coaches, and that will daily be given back *** THIS IS NOT FOR PAIN MEDICINE OR OTHER OVER THE COUNTER DRUGS.

  23. TRY OUTS ARE CLOSED!! No one may sit in and watch. The only people in gym when your child tries out will be coaches, judges, and a senior cheerleader who will assist the girls if needed. Parents will only be allowed to wait in the atrium outside of the cafeteria. They will not be allowed on the athletic hallway at anytime during tryouts. **Girls should keep their items locked in the locker room (INCLUDING PHONES)** You may wait with other candidates in the small gym and use the time to practice.**

  24. Schedule: April 7th-10th Monday- Check in and registration at doors to main basketball gym. Learn dance. 4-6 YOU MUST HAVE A PHYSICAL ON FILE TO TRY OUT! Tuesday- Mile Run/ Learn cheer-chant 4-6 Wednesday- Assess tumbling skills Continue practice in big gym 4-6 Thursday- Tryouts will begin promptly at 4:15. Once you have tried out, you may leave.

  25. What do I need to wear to tryouts? You MUST wear a SOLID white shirt with either red or black shorts. You may wear a hair ribbon, that is your choice. Please make sure that shorts and shirts are in good taste. No spaghetti straps, no bra straps should be visible, and no spandex only shorts. THIS DRESS CODE goes for all of try outs. *No spandex *No spaghetti straps *No bra straps visible. You may wear any color Monday-Wednesday.

  26. When will I find out if I made a squad? Squads will be posted on Coach Chambers’ teacher website on the Hillcrest homepage, under the staff tab, by 6:00pm, On Friday, April 11th. Questions and concerns regarding results will be handled by email ONLY. Please note that results are posted the week before spring break, so your concerns may not be answered until school resumes on April 21st. ljchambers@greenville.k12.sc.us

  27. Deciding Squads: Three judges, not associated with the school, will judge try outs. Coaches will use the scores as a guideline to decide the three teams. Coaches will also take into consideration body readiness, grade level, and performance over the course of try outs. *Please note try out scores do not reflect stunting abilities. Coaches will make judgments based on position and body readiness.

  34. Please note that these are estimated costs! Changes can ensue. **There will be fundraising opportunities** Each cheerleader is placed on a payment schedule, so all money is not paid out at once. Money will be paid over course of 3 months.

  35. Sample payment schedule: *All parents must join booster club! **NOTE** Gym membership fees are not included in the above chart

  36. Common Questions What is Rockstar and Carolina? How does my child get there and why do we go there?

  37. Rockstar is located in Greer and Carolina is located off of Pelham Road. Each cheerleader is responsible for her own ride to and from these gyms on the designated nights. Many parents car pool and take turns. It is not a coaches responsibility to get your child to these practices. Not having a ride is not a valid excuse for missing practice either. Cheerleaders who miss excessive gym practices may be sat.

  38. Common Questions… How is competitive cheer different from what I see on the sidelines at games?

  39. As a competitive cheerleader: Your child will spend 95% of practice time focusing on skills needed to be successful on the competitive level. Skills will include but are not limited to: *Weight lifting (weight training for participants 12 and under will be limited and modified) *Frequent running and cardio drills *Stunting drills *Flexibility drills *Dance skills
