  2. La familiay la cultura • Latin American family may or may not be different from your family, but I think it’s important to learn different family values • Let’s learn some of the cultural aspects of a Latin American family!

  3. What is considered “la familia”? • For Spanish speaking people, the term family does not only apply to the mom, dad, and siblings • It also includes the grandparents, the aunts and uncles, the cousins, and the godparents (of both sides)

  4. Are families close? • Families are extremely close-knit in Latin American households. • When the family celebrates an event (whether a holiday, a birthday, or another big event) the entire family gets together to celebrate • Family always comes first ! • (even before work )

  5. ¿Nombres? • Ever wondered why Spanish names are so long? • It’s because the individual takes the last names (apellidos) from both parents • So JosefaFernándezPrieto got the last name Fernándezfrom her father, and Prietofrom her mother • Some people even take their name from their grandparents :/ Carlos Alberto Del Castillo Cabeza De Vaca

  6. ¿El machismo? • Who’s at the head of the house? • Well the father is the head of the household/the family • Traditionally he works and brings in the $ / € • But the mother is the head of the house • That means everyone obeys mom • Childbirth side note…

  7. ¿El respeto? • Respect is a very important family value • The older the person, the more respect they receive – you must respect your elders • If anyone were to disrespect your family (even if you agree with them) you would have to confront that person • YOU’VE GOT YOUR FAMILY’S BACK!!!

  8. ¿La casa? • Often times, the abuelos will come live in their children’s homes when they get too old • Children get married much later than Americans (maybe mid- to late-30s), so instead of going off to live on their own they choose to stay and continue to live with their parents.

  9. ¿La iglesia? • The Church has had the greatest influence on family life over the years • Something like 90% of Latin American families are Roman Catholic (or at least the grandparents are) so the parents pay close attention to what the Church has to say about family life and how you should live it.
