  3. CONFRONTATION

  4. Confrontation • Confrontation- happens on a daily basis in the life of an RA. Confrontation with your residents is when a situation must be addressed with the resident that is responsible for the issue at hand.

  5. Steps for Confrontation Here are the steps to confront your residents effectively and appropriately: • Initiate contact • Establish rapport • Identify issue/problem • Agree on the problem • Come to a solution • Keep Commitment • Follow up and praise success

  6. Communicating with Residents Appropriately and Consistently Some ways to confront your residents effectively and appropriately: • Talk calmly • Knock on the door • Talking to residents in private • Talk to resident as soon as the incident happened

Communicating with Residents Appropriately and Consistently(continued) Some ways to confront your residents ineffectively and inappropriately (do NOT engage in): • Yelling • Keying in or banging on the door excessively • Yelling across the hall about the incident the resident was involved in • Waiting until a long amount of time has passed to address the resident’s behavior.

  8. Roommate mediation • One of your residents tells you that her roommate always has her girlfriend over until all hours of the night. She feels extremely uncomfortable with her current living situation and is demanding a room change.   12. Common Situations Covered in this Section • Vandalism • Noise Violations • Alcohol Violations • Drug Violations (Marijuana) • Domestic Violence • Transportation

  13. Vandalism • Take a picture and send to you RD (or email RD to let him/her know where/what the vandalism is so they can take a picture) • Ask residents of nearest room(s) if they are aware of the vandalism and if they know who is responsible • Send RD any information you find out.

  14. Noise Violations Procedure: • Knock on the door and identify yourself as the RA • Inform resident(s) that they are being too noisy. • If this was a blatant noise violation, the resident(s) should be documented.

  15. Noise • While on your 1 am round, you hear a TV blasting and loud laugher emerging from a room down the hall. Implement the steps given to handle the situation. • RA Role (New RA) • Roommate 1 (Returner) • Roommate 2 (Returner) Ka-BLAM!! Ka-SKIT!

Alcohol Violations • Knock on the door and identify yourself as the RA • If alcohol is present or evident, explain the nature of the violation, and ask that all the alcohol be placed in the middle of the floor. • Get identification of all residents and guests in the room. • Record the number of containers and type of alcohol for each. • Have residents pour alcohol down the drain. • Escort those who do not live in the room out. • HMS

  17. Drug Violations If you smell marijuana: • Call for backup if possible, and Identify the room responsible, • Call Campus Police/RD on Duty • Await Campus Police and RD arrival without confronting responsible residents. • HMS

  18. Alcohol • You hear very loud music coming from the room down the hall. You knock on the door to ask the residents to turn it down. When someone answers, you see a bottle of vodka across the room and two other residents with red solo cups. Implement the steps given to handle the situation.   19. Domestic Violence • When necessary contact campus police and/or RD on duty • Address the situation yourself • Remain patient (as this situation may not be resolved on the first attempt…or ever) • Email RD of building information as well as put in a “information only” HMS report • Follow-up

  20. Domestic Violence • You are doing rounds when you hear loud yelling and two people physically fighting in a room down the hall. Implement the steps given to handle the situation. • RA Role (Returner) • Roommate 1 (Returner) • Roommate 2 (Returner) Ka-BLAM!! Ka-SKIT!

  21. *Transports • Call campus police • Call RD on duty (or your RD during normal hours) • Follow the instructions of campus police and/or the RD on duty.

  22. Transport • You are coming back from hanging out with your friends when you find a resident passed out on the floor in your hallway. It is obvious that ze had been drinking. Implement the steps given to handle the situation. • RA Role (Returner) • Resident (Returner) KerPOW!! Ker-SKITS!

  25. Crisis Response The RA’s Role in a Crisis Response: To keep control of the situation until it can be handed off to a responding Police Officer or RD.

  26. Crisis Response Checklist • Call Campus Police • Call RD on duty • Follow the instructions of the RD and/or campus police • If on duty, include the incident in your duty report • Create an HMS report • Email your RD with incident details • Follow up with resident

Crisis Response: Physical Attack • Do not touch residents (even if trying to break up a fight!) • Call campus police and yell for residents to stop • Inform residents that Campus Police have been called and are on their way • Call RD on Duty • Follow instructions of RD and/or Campus Police • If on duty, include the incident in your duty report • Create an HMS report • Email your RD with incident details

  28. Physical Attack • You hear fighting in your hallway and when you go to check on the situation, you find that all your residents are circled around two people that are physically fighting. Implement the steps given to handle the situation. • RA Role (Returner) • Fighting Resident 1 (Returner) • Fighting Resident 2 (Returner) • Crowd of people (everyone else) Ka-BLAM!! Ka-SKIT!

  29. Crisis Response: Suicide Attempt • Call Campus Police • Call RD on duty • Follow the instructions of the RD and/or campus police • If on duty, include the incident in your duty report • Create an HMS report • Email your RD with incident details • Follow up with resident

Possible Suicide Attempt • You are sitting on Facebook when one one of your residents knocks on your door and tells you ze is worried about a suitemate who has been very depressed since their significant other dumped over Thanksgiving break. Ze feels as though the suitemate mate be planning on harming themselves. Implement the steps given to handle the situation. • RA Role (Returner) • Concerned suitemate (Returner) • Depressed Suitemate (Returner) Ka-BLAM!! Ka-SKIT!

  31. Suicidal Comments When an RA hears a suicidal comment from a resident the RA’s Role is to: • Address the comment right away • Refer to the steps that were given during campus connections. • These steps help to prevent suicidal actions
