1950’s Automobiles. By: Cameron Luecke.
Thesis. • 1950’s automobiles were better and more appealing than today's cars.
Safety in the automobiles. • Automobiles from the 1950s did not have seatbelts until the late 50’s. The 1950s is also when airbags were first introduced. Most people mocked the idea of seatbelts in cars, claiming that people were going to strap themselves in the cars as though they were rockets. As time passed, the seatbelt and airbag would become a mandatory safety precaution in automobiles.
The Cost. • The cost of the automobiles was on average about 16,000. Back then, that was a lot of money. And with jobs back then, people didn’t make a lot of money. It usually took a bunch of laborers savings and money put away to buy a new car at that market.
Design & Body. • Cars from the 1950s usually had big bulbous bodies, or sleek, streamlined bodies. It always depended on the make and model. Most of the cars had a fair amount of chrome on them. Some of the cars had tail fins that swept up from the body that added to the appeal to the car. The 50s are considered the ‘glamour age’ for the cars that were produced in the era. The cars were also produced in the jet age, making people yearn for a jet set lifestyle.
TIRES. • The cars in the 1950s usually used white wall tires. White wall tires are another symbol for the cars and for the 50s. Whit wall tires were tires with a white radius. They were another factor to the appeal of the car and they are a high prize for collectors these days, they are still made today as well.
The upkeep on the cars. • The upkeep on the cars was not all the best. They had big frames, which were hard to replace. They didn’t have as many belts in the motors as today's cars. They were easier to repair than today's cars due to all the different wiring and mechanisms in today's cars. The cars were usually repaired for a fair enough cost.
Shops/Dealers/Repair shops. • Many shops from the 1950s didn’t make too much money because the cars usually needed to be taken to a special place to be repaired. Many a time the cars would have to be taken back to the dealers themselves or repair shops. Dealers back then could have been honest, or corrupt. Corruption would have meant unfair prices, bad salesmanship, un kept cars, and other things.
About Dealers. • The biggest dealers back then was Rambler, AMC, Cadillac. Because of their models, they were the top cars that people wanted to have. Mostly because of their appearance and handling. Most ‘rich’ folk owned Cadillac's because of their streamlined appearance. They were all reasonably nice, and the upkeep was alright.
Product. • For my product, I made a car out of florist styrofoam representing the likeness of a car from the 1950s period.
Learning Stretch. • DON’T BE LAZY. • DON’T PROCRASTINATE. • GET YOUR STUFF DONE. • DO IT EARLY. • DO IT. • DO IT • DO IT. • DID I SAY TO DO YOUR WORK?!
CONCLOUSION. • So, I concluded that 1950s cars were all around a great piece of American history, changing and making traditions, making millions of Americans happy and making today's collectors happy as well.
