  2. Species • There are 20,000 species of butterflies in the world. • About 725 species are in North America North of New Mexico. • 575 are in the lower 48 states of the United States. • About 275 species occur regularly in Canada roughly 2,000 species are found in Mexico.

  3. Habitat • Butterflies drink nectar, tree sap and rotting animal matter. • Butterflies are active exclusively during the day and at night sleep on leaves, grass and rocks. • The average lifespan of a butterfly is one month.

  4. Kinds • The Largest Butterfly: The Female Queen Alexandra Bird wing with a wingspan up to 1 foot.(New Guinea) • The smallest Butterfly: Western Pigmy Blue with a half inch wingspan.(Africa) • Rarest Butterfly: Palos Verde Blue • Most Common Butterfly: Monarch

  5. Some Official State Butterflies • Mourning Cloak (Montana) • Two-tailed Swallowtail(Arizona) • Zebra Long wing (Florida) • Kamehameha (Hawaii) • Karner Blue(New Hampsire)

  6. Interesting Facts • A butterfly drinks its food, with a straw like tube called a Proboscis. • Butterflies have very small “dots” on their wings which are used to see. • Butterflies use their colors to keep predators away.
