What is Digital Dirt? • Unflattering personal information “drifting” around the Internet • Any information stored about you online could potentially be digital dirt. • Job hunters should know that recruiters can, and often do, read much of what's posted about them on the Web
Social Web Sites • Aren’t just for interacting with friend • They can be a potential way for an employer to gain additional information about you
Places Dirt Can be Found… • Search Engines • Google, Yahoo, MSN, etc. • Social networking websites • Facebook, MySpace, Friendster, XuQa, etc. • Online Journal Pages • Livejournal, Blogger, and many others • Internet messaging programs / bios • AIM, MSN Messenger, etc.
True or False? How does this affect me? • T or F : Checking out a potential hire online is not that common. • T or F: Recruiters use Google and other sites to check on candidates. • Tor F : Some Employers do background checks, including online searches, before conducting interviews False! True! True!
But my personal stuff is private right? Not necessarily… For example did you know that in Facebook all the following people may have access to your information: • Anyone with an email address from your university, including alums.
Who Can Access Facebook? (cont.) • Interns at companies all over the world with an university email • Any of your “friends” currently on your list (and maybe even their “friends”)
What are employers looking for? • Red Flags References to • drugs • Sex / sexism • Violence • Racism • Negativity
Are You Thinking – That’s Not Fair! • Why are you being judged on what you do outside of professional and academic life? Is it ethical? • What is within your control? • How can you protect yourself?
What Can You Do? • Search for yourself online • Google, Yahoo, and MSN are the most commonly used search engines • See something you don’t like? Ask that it be removed
What Can You Do? • Bury your digital dirt or increase your online presence. • Start a career-based blog (with only positive comments!) • Design a professional online portfolio • Join online groups related to your chosen and make intelligent, well thought-out comments
What Can You Do? • Finally, clean up your Facebook (MySpace, Flickr, whatever!). • Choose your friends wisely • Make sure to look at everything! • Pictures say a 1,000 words! • Look at your site with a critical eye • How would you feel if a professor, a future employer, or your parents saw your site
Social Networking Isn't All Bad - Is It? • It may create networking opportunities • Meet and greet for the new age • It’s a way to express yourself • Show your professionalism • Allows for increased ease of communication • Create an online portfolio or resume to highlight your accomplishments
In Summary… • If you represent yourself in a professional way, social networking can be a positive experience
