My Favorite Quotes "The way I see it, being dead is not terribly far off from being on a cruise ship.” (page 1) “A bright light at the end of a tunnel can seem warm and inviting, or it can seem mysterious and terrifying. People of the world "all working on their arts and crafts" can seem like heaven or, if you're me, hell.” Most of the time is spent laying on your back,” (page 1) “Who cuts off heads?... What I do is think of them as wax.” (page 8) “It is the mind that speaks a woman's heart, not the vaginal walls.” Cadaver “Life contains these things: leakage and wick age and discharge, pus and snot and slime and gleet. We are biology. We are reminded of this at the beginning and the end, at birth and at death. In between we do what we can to forget.” “You do not question an author who appears on the title page as "T.V.N. Persaud, M.D., Ph.D., D.Sc., F.R.C.Path. (Lond.), F.F.Path. (R.C.P.I.), F.A.C.O.G.” “Space doesn't just encompass the sublime and the ridiculous. It erases the line between.” Objectification “Death. It doesn't have to be boring.” “There are those who will disagree with me, who feel that to do anything other than burry or cremate the dead is disrespectful.” “Objectification is the reason why people will say ‘pork’ or ‘beef’ instead of saying I'm eating pig or cow.” “Hormones are nature's three bottles of beer.” “You are a person and then you cease to be a person, and a cadaver takes your place.” “No one is excluded from the astronaut corps based on penis size.”
"The way I see it, being dead is not terribly far off from being on a cruise ship.” This is on of my favorite quotes from the book because it is right in the beginning of the book, and really gave me a great outlook of how the book was written before I really got into the text. The voice that Marry Roach carries throughout the rest of the book mimics this quote, she not only loves to have fun with her job but can also be extremely helpful in teaching of what she does, and/or how to deal with certain things within the medical field.
“Objectification is the reason why people will say ‘pork’ or ‘beef’ instead of saying I'm eating pig or cow.” This is another one of my favorite quotes because it is one of the many tools that Mary Roach gives her readers to utilize within their own experiences with anatomy. I really enjoyed the learning aspect of the book along with appreciating Mary's humor and interesting and unusual outlook of anatomy and her job as a mortician.
