Sibling rivalry • Parents bring back food for the siblings to fight over, often to the death • Siblicide is advantageous to the winner, as he likely gains enough extra food to be able to produce more offspring as an adult • Does not compensate loss of progeny to the parent though, who discourages siblicide

  6. Discussion Question • Parent’s decision about incubation and hormone allocation put 2nd and 3rd eggs at risk for destruction or death. Why not save the energy that goes into producing those eggs? • One idea is the insurance policy; invest in a back-up egg in case the first egg doesn’t hatch, or something happens to the nestling. • How could you test the insurance hypothesis?
