2004 Age-Adjusted Estimates of the Percentage of Adults† with Diagnosed Diabetes in Oklahoma 2008 Age-Adjusted Estimates of the Percentage of Adults† with Diagnosed Diabetes in Oklahoma Statistics Almost 278,000 adult Oklahomans have diabetes. Another 113,400 are estimated to have undiagnosed diabetes. Oklahoma is the 7th most obese state. Oklahoma is in the top 10 for highest rates of diabetes, hypertension, and physical inactivity. Nearly 30% of Oklahoma children are either overweight or obese. 65.1% of Oklahomans are either overweight (with a body mass index [BMI] >25) or obese (BMI>30). Aim • Increase awareness about diabetes in adults and children at high risk for developing diabetes • Objectives • Travel into community and provide screening and basic education for adults and children • Provide additional follow-up session that includes more information about risk factors, screening tests, nutrition and exercise information
Implementation • Start with pilot event at festival in Chouteau, OK in September • Evaluate pilot event results • Expand to additional events in and around Tulsa—fairs, festivals, football games, etc. • Schedule follow up sessions at OU Schusterman using OU professionals
