Staff training and development • Access the VLE and understand the principles of its use • Design lessons plans incorporating the inclusion of the VLE for learner access 24/7 • Design on-line tests/Quizzes for automatic marking and fact finding on learner progress • Design suitable teaching and learning materials using a variety of application software and quizzes that run on the VLE and up-load to VLE • Use the VLE for recording practice tests • Use the VLE for communications with learners • Use the VLE’s discussion board for group forums
ECPD Units 1. e-learning fundamentalsEssential knowledge and skills for e-learning • Using an e-learning environmente-learning techniques to support and enhance teaching and learning using the tools & features of Blackboard VLE • Blended learningOrganise and present course materials and activities using a variety of teaching and learning resources
Documents Produced • Adding Staff information to Blackboard courses • Sample quiz questions • Creating quizzes or tests in Blackboard • Linking generic course folders or file to own course • Viewing video production to see if staff require similar video producing • Using Qwizdom voting system and designing quizzes using Actionpoint
Qwizdom voting system review by Lee Bogg (plastering lecturer) Aim: to use the voting system to support and benefit learners to help retain their knowledge to pass exams. “I designed my own multiple choice questions and placed each into a PowerPoint slide and set the questions up for automatic answering via the hand held remote control. I trialled the system for revision with my group of eight adult learners studying for the ICA in Plastering. This method was the only method I used to test the learners’ knowledge to get them ready to take the ICA on-line exam. I used Qwizdom three times increasing the number of questions each time from 50 up to 150”.
The automatically generated Qwizdom results came out at Practice 1 67% Practice 2 85% Practice 3 97% Following the last practice test the learners took their on-line test with the results of 5 Distinctions 2 Credits 1 Pass “Ironically, the learner who obtained the Pass grade did not attend the revision sessions! So it is thanks to the value of using ICT and the idea of how I could use Qwizdom to help retain my learners’ knowledge that such excellent results were obtained.
Observation of Teaching and Learning In one of my OTLs an area for improvement was involving all learners in questioning and not allowing a stronger learner to take over. This voting system allows all learners to participate in questioning anonymously. I now plan to use Qwizdom for Foundation Construction Award learners and any generic areas I develop can then be shared across college”.
