Form 1: Instructional Situation • Course Goal: to educate high school students about the basics of depression. Topics will include symptoms and risk factors, biology, identifying healthy life style choices, ways to find help/resources, and mental health stigma • Number of Students: approx 15-25 • Educational Background: high school, 10-12th grade
Form 1: Instructional Situation • Setting: school health classroom • Timing:unit of a general health curriculum class, 5 week unit, seven 90 min sessions, one 60 min session • Constraints: large class size, language and literacy barriers, availability of instructional materials • Resources: health teacher, classroom, video/DVD machine, overhead projector, computer, art materials, guest speakers
Form 2b: Performance Expectations: Health Behaviors • Defines risk factors and symptoms of clinical depression • Illustrates the basic biology of depression • Identifies healthy lifestyle choices to prevent depression/depressed moods and promote wellness • Locates sources of help for those who are depressed • Articulates the meaning of stigma as it applies to mental illness
Form 2b • Defines risk factors and symptoms of clinical depression a) identify risk factors for clinical depression b) identify symptoms of clinical depression (based on DSM-IV) and how they affect physical, social, and emotional well being c) distinguish between normal situational upsets and actual clinical depression d) able to define co-morbidity and give examples e) differentiate between clinical depression and other mood disorders
Form 2b: Literature Search and Interview • Literature search on adolescent mental health literacy • Interview with a psychiatrist • Interview with a health teacher from an urban charter school
Form 3A: Competency Based Learning, Objectives • Objective: Defines risk factors and symptoms of depression When given: vignettes/ case studies of patients suffering from mood disorders The student will be able to: identify risk factors and symptoms of clinical depression, differentiate between clinical depression and other mood disorders, and distinguish between normal upsets and clinical depression, define co-morbidity and give examples
