Power for the 21st Century • World is facing an imminent energy crisis • Natural resources will soon be exhausted • Global Pandemonium • What is the new energy source? HYDROGEN!!
How Hydrogen Works • Chemical reaction takes place between hydrogen and oxygen in a fuel cell. • This converts chemical energy into electrical energy. • The hydrogen atom is broken down into positive ions (hydrogen protons) and negative ions (electrons).
Hydrogen is Positive • Renewable (Oil, the most popular current energy source, is not renewable) • Easy to obtain hydrogen (just run an electrical current through water) • Hydrogen burns clean = no pollution • Releases 3 times more energy than gasoline
Hydrogen is the Future • Public is still unaware of the possible use of hydrogen as an energy source • Someday, hydrogen may power anything from a common lawnmower to an entire city
The Exhibit – Why Hydrogen? • Educate the public with an interesting exhibit that may be a part of their lives in the future • Show the public that hydrogen really can be used as a sufficient energy source
Sub-exhibits • Model about harvesting hydrogen • Natural hydrogen from air and environment • Turned into energy • Model/Presentation showing hydrogen fuel cell • Cross-section of cell • Show visitor what happens within the cell
Model Neighborhood • Model neighborhood powered by hydrogen plant • Show the range of items that can be powered by hydrogen
Interactive Displays • Hydrogen-powered vehicle • Visitor rides on a closed circuit track • Give visitors a sense of how hydrogen works as well as what it can be used for • Attracts children and adults • 3-D Model showing formation of hydrogen • Aluminum/gallium alloy mixed with water reacts to form hydrogen • One of many ways to gather hydrogen
Interactive Displays (cont.) • Make-your-own hydrogen fuel cell • Actually build the cell with provided materials • Attracts adults and children • Hydrogen-powered RC cars • Younger visitors
Main Attraction • Hydrogen-powered cars • Public can sit in and view interior of car • Cars turned on to show silence • Show that the only waste product is water
So What? • Hydrogen is a part of our future • Hydrogen may soon replace many of our natural resources for power • Positive – no pollution, etc. • Educate ourselves now!
Making an Exhibit Our Plan
Group Leader Roles • Lindsey – Project Manager • Carlos and Lindsey – Oversee Storyboard Group • Kevin and Anish – Oversee Model Group
Group Member Responsibilities Model Group • Lindsey • Kevin • Anish • James • Kishan Storyboard Group • Carlos • Kelly • Miles • Zach
Group Member Responsibilities (cont.) Exhibit Narrative • Carlos • Kelly Expense Report • Kevin • Kishan
Brainstorm Storyboard Ideas • 12 panels – maximize amount given • Panels show exhibit as if someone was walking through it from beginning to end • A few panels show the overall exhibit • More hand drawn pictures than collages • Last panel – key messages • Each panel represents one part of the exhibit in no particular order
Best Ideas • Panels are read as if the visitor was walking through the exhibit • Have equal number of collages and drawings if they are appropriate • 12 panels • 1 panel is an overhead view of entire exhibit • 1 panel represents key ideas – at the end
Brainstorm Model Ideas • “Blue” theme • “Train” that carries visitors around a track to view hydrogen information • Go-Karts • Life-size car • Model of fueling station • Shimmering walls • Water projector screen for visuals
Best Ideas • Upon entering, visitors can view the hydrogen fueling station • They move on to a hydrogen-powered “train” that moves around a track with information on the walls and audio playing on headsets • After the ride, visitors can race RC cars powered by hydrogen
Summary • Hydrogen power may replace our energy source in the future • Hydrogen is renewable, easy to obtain, does not give off pollutants, and releases 3 times more energy than gasoline • Public is still unaware of the possible use of hydrogen as an energy source
Summary – The Exhibit • Educate the public! • Sub-Exhibits • Process of making hydrogen fuel cell • Model neighborhood • Powered solely by hydrogen • Interactive Exhibits • Sit in a hydrogen car
Educate yourself now! Hydrogen is Your Future
