  2. Birth • His full name was Simón José Antonio de la Santísima Trinidad Bolívar y Palacios Ponte Blanco. • Born July 24, 1783 in Caracas, New Granada ( is now Venezuela) • He had a rich family, who got their money from gold and copper mines that they owned in Caracas.

  4. Early Years • He moved to Spain in 1799, after the deaths of his parents. • Married María Teresa in 1802, when he was nineteen. • When the couple returned to Venezuela to visit in 1803, María Teresa sickened and died of yellow fever.

  6. 1810-1813 • As he returned to Venezuela, Bolivar joined a group of patriots that attempted to seize Caracas in 1810 and proclaimed independence from Spain. • He went to Great Britain in search of help, but could get only a promise of British neutrality. • When he returned to Venezuela, he took command of a patriot army and recaptured Caracas from the Spaniards.(1813)

  7. March 1811 • A national congress met in Caracas. • Bolivar gave his first public speech to the group. • He said, "Let us lay the cornerstone of American freedom without fear. To hesitate is to perish.“ • The First Republic was declared July 5, Venezuela becoming the first colony anywhere in the Spanish empire to attempt to break free. • Bolivar had slaves, and he was the first to set them free. • He was later considered famous when talking about slavery across the Western Hemisphere.

  8. Freemason • Was a freemason • In 1803 he was initiated into the Masonic Lodge Lautaro which operated in Cadiz, Spain. • In May 1806 he earned the rank of Master Mason(3rddegree) • It is a necessity for participation in most aspects of Masonry.

  12. President • became the first president of the original republic of Colombia • It is now Ecuador, Colombia, Panama, and Venezuela. • Happened on December 17, 1819 .

  13. 1821-1825 • Bolivar crushed the Spanish army at Carabobo in Venezuela on June 24, 1821. • After a meeting in 1822 with another great liberator, Bolivar became dictator of Peru. • His army won a victory over the Spaniards at Auacucho in 1824. • Upper Peru became a separate state, named Bolivia in his honor in 1825. • The constitution that he created for Bolivia, was one of his most important political ideas.

  15. Tuberculosis • It is a disease caused by a bacterium called Mycobacterium tuberculosis. • The bacteria usually attack the lungs, but it can attack any part of the body, such as the kidney, spine, and brain. • If not treated properly, it can be fatal.
