Acute Appendicitis The appendix is markedly swollen. The serosa is hyperemic and covered by a fibrinous exudate. Compare the inflammed appendix to the adjacent segments of a normal appendix.
Edematous serosa Focal ulceration, necrosis of mucosa
Intraluminal neutrophils Mucosal ulceration Transmural inflammation
Mucosa with scattered neutrophils Neutrophils admixed with lymphocytes of the lamina propria
