8.1 Laws of Exponents: Multiplying Monomials Objectives: Define exponents and powers. Find products of powers. Simplify products of monomials. Standard Addressed: 2.1.8.B: Simplify numerical expressions involving exponents. 2.1.8.E: Simplify and expand algebraic expressions using exponential form.
Ex. 3 Suppose that a colony of bacteria doubles in size every hour. If the colony contains 1000 bacteria at noon, how many bacteria will the colony contain at 3 P.M. and at 5 P.M. of the same day? • 1000 * 23 = 8000 NOON to 3 P.M. • 1000 * 25 = 32,000 NOON to 5 P.M.
To simplify a product of monomials, use the following steps: • Remove the ( ) and use the Commutative and Associative Properties of Multiplication to rearrange the terms. Group the constants together, and then group like variables together. • Simplify by using the Product-of-Powers Property where appropriate.
Ex. 4 d. • C. -21x12y6z • D. 16x8y10 c.
