Introduction IT Project Management
Content • Project Management Overview • PMBOK • 5 Process Groups • 9 Knowledge Areas
Learning Outcomes • Define what a project is • 3 Characteristics • Explain diagrammatically the five (5) process groups of project management • List and briefly explain the nine (9) knowledge areas of project management • Explain how the nine knowledge areas integrate into with the five processes
What is a Project? • A temporary endeavour undertaken to create a unique product, service, or result • Projects are temporary • Start Date and an End Date • Projects produce a unique deliverable: • Product (e.g. XBOX) • Capability to perform a service (e.g. Can now securely store customer data) • Result (e.g. Research statistics, now we know what people are looking for in portable media players). • Progressive Elaboration • Over time projects get more refined/specific
Exercise • Consider I202 IT Project Management as a project • How is it temporary? • What are the unique deliverables?(product, service, result) • Will there be progressive elaboration?
PMI • PMI & PMBOK • Project Management Institute • http://www.pmi.org (http://www.pmi.org.nz) • Founded in 1969 by working project managers • Over half a million members • 250 Chapters in over 70 countries • Publish: • A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge • (PMBOK Guide) • Currently 4th Edition (December 08/January 09) • Global Standard • Certification: PMP (based on the PMBOK Guide)
PMBOK • A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK Guide) • Identifies 5 Process Groups: • Initiating, Planning, Executing, Controlling, Closing • (Project Life Cycle) • Identifies 9 Knowledge Areas: • Integration, Scope, Time, Cost, Quality, Human Resources, Communication, Risk, Procurement
Project Management Processes • 5 Project Management Process Groups • Initiating • Planning • Executing • Monitoring(Controlling) • Closing 1Initiating 2Planning 3Executing 4 Controlling 5Closing
Project Management Processes • 5 Project Management Process Groups 4 Monitoring & Controlling 2 Planning 1 Initiating 5 Closing 3 Executing
9 Knowledge Areas • Project Management Integration • Project Scope Management • Project Time Management • Project Cost Management • Project Quality Management • Project Human Resources Management • Project Communications Management • Project Risk Management • Project Procurement Management
9 Knowledge Areas • Integration • Understanding and managing how the other 8 knowledge areas work together • Scope • What does and doesn’t need to be done for the project • Time • When will things happens and how long will they take
9 Knowledge Areas • Cost • How much will it cost • Quality • How do we ensure quality • Human Resources • Who’s going to do what =
9 Knowledge Areas • Communications • Who needs to communicate with who, what do they need to talk about, and when will it happen? • Risk • What are the potential risks in the project and what will we do if they become a reality? • Procurement • Will we outsource parts of the project? And/or will we sell thefinished project to someone else?
Project Management • K • Project Management is managing the 9 knowledge areas during the 5 processes
5 Processes & 9 Knowledge Areas Controlling Integration Scope Time Cost Quality Human Resources Communications Risk Procurement Executing Initiating Planning Closing
Overlap • In any given project there will always be overlap/interaction between the 5 processes and overlap/interaction between the 9 knowledge areas • Exercise: • Change Impact
Review • Can you: • Define what a project is? • 3 Characteristics • Explain diagrammatically the five (5) process groups of project management? • List & briefly explain the nine (9) knowledge areas of project management? • Explain how the nine knowledge areas integrate into the five process groups?
