  1. Fort Knox Energy Initiatives Fort Knox Energy Program One of the Nation’s Best UNCLASSIFIED R.J. Dyrdek / KNOX-DPW/(502) 624-2604 (DSN 464) /robert.dyrdek@us.army.mil 1 of 36

  2. CONTROL !!!! • Meter all your consumption (Electric, gas, water ??) • Use the data from the meters to drive your decisions • Get to real time data for the critical items (15 minute) • Make sure you can control those big items real time • Just like the utility company does with you, demand limiting • The bottom line is you have to make decisions that effect the BILL !! • You can do this in such a way that you benefit the environment as well as the bottom line.

  3. Our Second Largest bill on Post behind the labor bill !!

  4. 6th largest city in Kentucky 109,000 acres 30,000+ Soldiers & 8,600 civilians 17,264,000 ft2 of building space 500-bed hospital 661KSF Classroom Space 67 barracks buildings New 900KSF Office Complex Airfield Post Office Shopping Venues 61 Training Ranges Numerous Recreation Facilities Fort Knox, Kentucky

  5. Energy Saving Projects

  6. Improve low lighting conditions while saving energy Provide on-demand lighting through use of occupancy sensors Harvest natural light when applicable Eliminate High Intensity Discharge (HID) lighting indoors Lighting Improvements

  7. Infrared systems heat buildings in the same way the sun heats the earth Energy efficient (92%) Quick heat recovery Environmentally friendly Reduced heating costs Comfortable heat Focus heat on people and objects Eliminate inefficient boilers ** 110 buildings on post, typically high bay maintenance and storage Infrared Heating Infrared heat @ Godman Army Airfield

  8. Upgraded insulation in multiple types of buildings Spray foam Encapsulated crawl spaces improving energy efficiency and indoor air quality Decreases infiltration and creates a tight building Used primarily on old leaky maintenance buildings Insulation Upgrades

  9. Replaced majority of windows in older facilities Established a minimum standard for historical and commercial type windows for both repair and new construction Windows used must be: Thermopane insulated panel Low E glass Argon or Krypton filled 30-year replacement warranty Installed per manufacturer’s guideline to provided tightness seal and vapor barrier Energy Efficient Windows

  10. GroundCoupled Heat Pumps • A typical example of many large groundcoupled heat pump projects constructed at Fort Knox. This 5-building complex (140K ft2) was disconnected from natural gas and connected to a geothermal ground coupled heat pump system (containing 130 500-ft deep wells) parking lot during well installation Former Headquarters well field under parking lot Garrison Headquarters

  11. Ground Coupled Heat Pumps Facts: ~6 million ft2 of “eligible” 12 million ft2 heated and cooled from constant earth temperature ~5000 wells (500 ft deep) to couple with the earth temp of 57°F ~900 miles of underground piping 3 leaks in system in 9 years, fixed by installer HVAC-automation team Nolin/Harshaw-Trane

  12. Drill renewable energy from below Fort Knox that is trapped within the Devonian Shale Entire project conceived and accomplished at no cost to the government Gas production began in January 2009 Gas price is indexed to 86% of the NYMEX spot price Government saves transportation and marketing fees Government has a pricing cap of $11.00 per MCF Provides enough gas for entire summertime load Renewable Methane Gas

  13. Renewable Methane Gas

  14. New Initiatives/ Research and Development (R&D)

  15. $2,223,890 $4,979,053

  16. Rendering of New Power Generation Facilities

  17. Results

  18. Master Meter Data

  19. Impact on the Environment Effective 1/5/2007 * Note: Equivalent reductions are equal to one of the above items

  20. End of Brief INSTALLATION MANAGEMENT COMMAND “Sustain, Support and Defend”
