Greetings from Athulya! Bright and sunny mornings, hot and crazy afternoons and we are charging full gear into the summer season. The peak of the season isn’t here yet, but the feeling is in. Summers are advancing fast and hard the past few years. We are not alone in feeling it. Come summer, come summer treats! Yes, a hot summer warrants cool treats for the body and soul. This issue has tips for summer preparedness. This issue is special in its own way. The month of March witnessed a milestone moment in Athulya. Athulya has spread its wings and taken another step towards spreading reliable senior care. The soft launch ceremony of Athulya Perungudi, is the apple of the eye of this edition. We have always attempted to curate the best reads for our readers. Sometimes it comes to us like a breeze, sometimes like the scanty water drops during summer water shortag- es. Nevertheless, it has been a fun experience, putting together a little something of what we found interesting and meaningful. In sight of creating better content and information for all of you, we have decided to pub- lish the newsletter editions quarterly. Henceforth, you shall fnd in your hands better and read-worthy newsletter editions every quarter of the year. Athulya Assisted Living Perungudi Soft Launch The new destination is here. Yes, aging is now rede- fned at Perungudi. Athulya Assisted Living Soft Launch ceremony was held at the Perungudi facility on the 4th of March. The soft launch ceremony marked the milestone of the start of a third centre, with an upgrade of more rooms and amenities. The ceremony was conducted as per traditional rituals prescribed for the house- warming festivities. The auspicious gathering was followed by breakfast and photograph sessions with the guests. All the well-wishers of Athulya Assisted Living graced the occasion and reinforced the support that they have also provided. The entire Athulya team, responsi- ble for the care that seniors can experience, were also part of the function. The housewarming pooja rituals stated at the stroke of dawn and continues well into the day, invoking the blessings and strength of the Almighty in enabling the Perungudi facility to pave way for pioneering senior care. The guest list featured eminent well-wishers includ- ing, Mr. Ravindra Sannareddy – Managing Director of Sri City Pvt. Ltd, Dr. Navaladi Shankar – renowned orthopaedic surgeon and Mr. Prashanth Rajagopalan – Founder of MGM hospitals, Chennai. At the end of the ceremony, the guests accompanied plant saplings back home, as the festive favour. The plant sapling was a token of gratitude, expressing heartfelt thanks while simultaneously contributing to the greater greener good. www.athulyaliving.com
Summer Version: 2019 The word itself sends out heat waves, making us sweat in dark anticipation. We’re talking about the six-lettered word – Summer. Every year it only gets better and better. For the heat, of course. Not for us. This makes it mandatory for us to prepare ourselves and our loved ones well ahead of the summer season. Another valid reason in this stance is that, the heat does not take kindly to age. Elders face the brunt of the scorching summer heat as well. With age the abilities to cope with environmental factors go down. We hear news of lot of elders, where the summer season has got the better of, leading to injuries and even casualties. Being armed to face the summer only gives us the chance to avoid the bitter consequences of summer. Let us look into how seniors can be prepared to face this summer. Staying cool Staying cool in summer is not a one-shot efort. Going through long summers require continu- ous eforts. The following titbits may be followed for defeating the summer at least partially: • Bring on the summer wear. We don’t mean the swimsuits. We mean the cotton and khadi wear that our traditions have always emphasized. The natural wear was praised, not for its fashion but for the functional comfort during summers. • The style of clothes afects the level of comfort. Bring on the baggy. Do not fret. The chances of us looking like sacks of clothes mean nothing compared to the sun burns and heat strokes. www.athulyaliving.com
Eating healthy • Eating healthy is key to maintaining not only our sanity during summer but also our body tem- perature. It is important to pay attention to this. Maintaining optimum body temperature spares from the unnecessary consequences of high body heat coupled with the high heat outside. • Include tons of salad vegetables and fruits. The clue is water. Consume more of the vegetables and fruits that have high water content. To name a few, cucumbers, watermelons, pumpkins, gourds, etc. • Drink water. WAIT, this is not eating. Yes, its drinking water that counts. Fresh fruit juices are also a good option. Be mindful about the sugar. Other traditional Indian drinks for the summer include – the famed Aam Panna (the raw mango delicacy), the classic jeera infused water and the best ever – our very own homemade buttermilk. • Avoid spicy food. The rich favour that we like so much can prove disastrous in summers. Apart from raising our body heat to a new high, it can lead to painful stomach sicknesses as well. Cool surroundings • Keep the windows and doors covered during the hot afternoons. A curtain or screen would do. Keep the doors open though, to let in the occasional pockets of breeze. It is also important to keep windows and doors at both ends open. This will allow circulation of the breeze. • House plants like the areca plant, aloe vera and ‘money plant’ (golden pothos) can help keep the home cool. Nurture them. • If you reside in a two-storeyed house, use the lower portion of the house, away from the terrace. The terrace absorbs the hot sun rays directly, letting them seep through to the second foor. www.athulyaliving.com
Culinary corner Beat the heat with curd! Curds and buttermilk are some of the best ways to cool of in the summers. What else, to make with curd if not our curd rice! Cucumber and carrot curd rice Ingredients 1 cup cucumber chopped 1 cup carrot grated 1 1/2 cups chilled curd 3/4 cup steamed rice 1/4 cup coriander leaves chopped 1/4 tsp green chilli paste salt to taste For tempering 1 tsp oil 1 tsp cumin seeds 1 tbsp urad dal 1/4 tsp asafoetida 6 curry leaves Method 1. Mix the steamed rice with curd and other ingre- dients. 2. Heat the oil in a non-stick pan and add the cumin seeds. Allow to splutter. 3. Then add the urad dal, asafoetida and curry leaves and sauté on a medium fame for 1 minute. 4. Pour the tempering over the rice mixture and mix well. 5. Serve immediately. Do not keep out for a long time, the summer heat can make it sour over time. www.athulyaliving.com
