The Spread of the Ideals of the Enlightenment • Do you think this describes a good teacher? • He/she was able to communicate that body of knowledge in a clear and even witty fashion that appealed to his audiences in a meaningful way. • I would agree that it does… • Well, it also describes Bernard de Fontenille’s ability to spread the ideals of the Enlightenment…and he wasn’t the only one. The philosophes (as the Enlightenment thinkers were called) were able to spread the message of the Enlightenment in creative writings; many were then able to passionately argue their newfound belief systems… • The Enlightenment: the time when all institutions and all systems of thought were subject to the rational, scientific way of thinking if only people would free themselves from the shackles of old, worthless traditions, especially religious ones.

The Flow of Ideas and the Goals of those Ideas • The flow: Hobbes  Locke and Netwon  Philosophes (French giants: Montesquieu, Voltaire, and Diderot) • *** (many would argue he’s not part of the Enlightenment) • The goals (country-specific): Philosophes would use other regions of the world to attack their home country’s policies—but they didn’t want to use their country so they could be able to publish their thoughts without being punished • The French Enlightenment program’s goals: attack traditional religion, advocate religious toleration, denounce slavery, and use reason to liberate human beings from their prejudices

6. So, now that we know this…what’s up Doc? • The Docs are up. • You will receive a packet. You are responsible for knowing what’s in it. • However, you will work more closely with one doc, Doc. • Directions: Teach your document well tomorrow. The end. Have fun. • I have groups set in my head but have to wait to confirm who will and won’t be here tomorrow to figure out how to group people together. Those that won’t be here will present when they come back. That will make things a little disjointed, but that’s becoming the norm in here.  (that smiley face looks slightly creepy)
