HISTORY OF MSMC • Private, Catholic, primarily women’s college • Founded by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet in 1925 • The first baccalaureate of science in nursing program in California was established at Mount St. Mary’s College, graduating its first class in 1952 • Since its inception, Mount St. Mary’s College has granted more than 17,000 degrees

6. Nursing Programs at the Mount • FOUR NURSING PROGRAMS • DOHENY • Associate Degree in Nursing – 2 to 3 years • Classes in evening or afternoons • clinical on weekends, 12-hr days • Overall GPA of 2.75 or greater • Science GPA of 2.5 or greater Starts in Fall and Spring of each year

7. Nursing Programs at the Mount Chalon Campus Traditional BSN Day Program – 3-4 years Classes and Clinicals during daytime hours • 32 prerequisite units • Overall GPA of 3.0 or greater • Science GPA of 2.7 • RN-BSN option • Starts Fall of each year

8. Nursing Programs at the Mount Doheny Campus • Accelerated BSN Program – 12 months • Must have a Bachelors Degree • 46 units of pre-requisite courses • Overall GPA of 3.0 or greater • Starts Summer and Fall of each year

9. Nursing Programs at the Mount Doheny Campus • RN to BSN Completion Program– 12 months • 21 units of Nursing Curriculum • 3-18 units depending on admittance to Direct or Pre-Nursing option • Overall GPA of 2.8 or greater • Starts Spring and Fall of each year

12. Evening and Weekend Program Adults who want to pursue a career in nursing Classes - Monday to Thursdays evenings Hospital experiences are on weekends, usually Sat/Sun, but may include Fridays

13. Two options available • Pre- Nursing Option (2.5 - 3 years) • Take GE courses in first semester(s) • Start nursing courses after completing GE courses • Direct-to-Nursing Option (2-2 1/2 years) • Transfer all GE courses, start nursing program

14. Evening/Weekend Program: • FULL-TIME: • Rigorous • Intense • Prior to admission must plan for • Time management • Consistent support system • Course load: 6 to 13 units/semester; • A minimum of 6 units to qualify for financial aid.

15. ADN Curriculum Plan Total program: ten, 8-week sessions A total of 83 units required As outlined in the college catalog

16. What is the schedule like? • Two 8-week sessions/semester • 8-week summer session • Fall semester -late August to December • Spring semester -January to May • Summer session- mid-May to mid-July.

17. Class Schedule of Hours • Classes: • Evenings -> Mon – Thurs, 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. • Afternoon -> Mon – Thurs, 12:30-4:30p.m. • You will be on campus 1-2 times per week. • Clinical experiences: • Saturdays/Sundays, 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. • Occasionally on Fridays, depending on course.

18. Medication Math Calculation Exam • 100% required EVERY nursing course with a clinical • 2 chances allowed • If failed, the course must be dropped. • This will delay the completion date of the program.

19. LVN Mobility Option Degree Option: Must complete ALL GE requirements Must possess an active LVN license. Must meet all other AD.N. requirements to receive 10 units of nursing credits for Med.-Surg Nursing PRIORto starting the program.

20. 30 Unit Option - LVNs Non-Degree Option: • Allows NCLEX-RN exam after completing 26 units of required courses. • NOTE: • May not be endorsed by other states • May limit opportunities for career advancement • Does not receive a degree from MSMC

21. Clinical Requirements Nursing = an educational program Which includes a clinical component, i.e., “hands on” requirement Cultural competence An appreciation for the common good

22. Clinical Site Assignment Carpooling is strongly encouraged A reliable car is amust to get to the hospital. Proximity from home to clinical site, although considered, is not a priority in assignments. The responsibilities simulate employment. No make-up for absenteeism, which may result in withdrawing from course and may alter graduation date.

24. RANDOM DRUG TESTING Clinical facilities may require random drug testing of students Failure to comply or a positive will result in exclusion from clinical Exclusion from clinical results in failure or withdrawal from the program

26. BACKGROUND CHECK Mandatory prior to clinical placement 1st semester: process will be coordinated by the program Any concerns must be addressed BEFOREbeginning the program.

29. Successful Completion Earns: A.A. Degree in Nursing Eligible to take the NCLEX-RN EXAM A stepping stone to other Nursing opportunities such as Bachelors of Science in Nursing, MSN, DNP, PhD

Common issues that disqualify candidates: • Missing or late transcripts • Not submitting up-to-date transcripts • Missing or late letters of reference • Reactivation forms without Self Reporting Checklist and Updated Personal Statement Facts Regarding Admission The Office of Admission receives over 300 applications for the Associate Degree in Nursing program; therefore your applications and all supporting documents must be complete and submitted on or before the deadline. No exceptions will be made.

If you submit the application PDF, the application fee is $50.

Please note: we receive a lot of documents 2 weeks before and after the deadline, so it takes longer during that time for items to be reflected in WebAdvisor.
