“Developmental Education” “Developmental Education is courses or services provided for the purpose of helping underprepared college students attain their academic goals.” --Dr. Hunter R. Boylan in What Works: Research-Based Best Practices in Developmental Education (2002)
Developmental education includes: • coursework • all forms of learning assistance, such as tutoring, mentoring, and supplemental instruction • personal, academic, and career counseling • academic advisement --National Association for Developmental Education
“Remedial” Based on a medical model: • Diagnosis, Prescription, Remedy • Implies “fixing” something Re-teaching material Why inappropriate term?
