Winter2017 TangibleResults Michellerecentlycompletedtheworkshopandsays,“WhatI reallyenjoyedaboutthisserieswastherelaxationtechniquesIlearnedandhowthe mindandbodyaresodirectlyrelated.Now,Iamalwayslisteningto ImprovingClients’Health DuPagePadsOffersChronicDiseaseSelf-ManagementSeries DuPagePadsishostingafree,on-going,six-weekChronicDiseaseSelf-Managementseriestoassistparticipantsinimprovingtheirqualityoflifeandmanagingtheirowncare.StaffatDuPagePadshavebeencertifiedtofacilitatethisgroupsession. Chronichealthconditionsincludehypertension(highbloodpressure),diabetes,asthma,COPD(chronicobstructivepulmonarydisease),congestiveheartfailure,arthritisandmentalhealthillness.In2016,oftheindividualsDuPagePadsserved,370reportedhavingatleastoneoftheseconditionsand517reportedhavingamentalhealthillness. Theseconditionsareoftenexacerbatedbyhomelessnessitself:nothavingstable housing,beingfoodinsecure,transportationissues,experiencingharshweatherconditionsandalackofsocialconnectednessallnegativelyimpactone’shealth. myrelaxationCDandmygrandsonisenjoyingittoo!” Whenchronichealthconditionsarenotmanagedproperly,programparticipantsendupbeinghospitalizedorusingtheemergencyroom.Notonlyistheclient’shealthsuffering,butitiscostliertotaxpayersthaniftheclienthadbeenregularlyaccessingprimarycarefromaphysician.   2. ADayIWillNeverForget–John’sStory IgrewupinDuPageCounty,graduatedfromWheatonNorthandattendedtheUniversityofIllinoisuntilIbecamemoreinterestedinfoodservicethanengineering. For45yearsIworkedinthehotelandfoodserviceindustry,doingmanyjobsfromcookingandservingtopurchasing.IworkedatFourSeasons,KnickerbockerandHyattHotelsinChicago. Mylifestrugglesbeganwhenmymother,wholivedaloneinCarolStream,fellandshatteredherfoot.Iagreedtohelpherdaily,eventhoughIwasworking12hoursadayindowntownChicago,whereIalsolived. Iwouldgethertorehab,shopforher,andhelpherfinancially.Aftertwoyearsofthe2-3hourdailycommute,IquitmyjobandmovedtoCarolStream. Nevermuchofadrinkerbefore,Iturnedtoalcoholthen.BeforeIknewit,Ihad3DUI’s,whichisafelony. Inotonlylostmylicense,butmycareer.Icouldnotworkinhotels–mostlargecompanieswillnothireconvictedfelons.Itwashumiliatingtoapply.Irodemybikeeverywhereandworkedforsmall“MaandPaplaces,”doingwhateverwasneeded. IreachedapointwhereIcouldnolongersupportmyself,andspenttimeatDuPagePadsshelters.IusedtheERasmydoctor,andfoundmyselfblackingoutoften.Ihadhighbloodsugarandmyfeetscreamedwithpain.Iignoredmyhealthissues,andcontinuedridingmybiketosheltersites,eveninthesnow,withallIownedonmyback. Ayearago,aftergettinghitbyacaronmybike,IrealizedIwas“adeadmanwalking.”DuPagePadscasemanagersgavemehope,andIrealizedthefirststepwastostopdrinking. Whileinrehab,Ilearnedaboutchronicdiseaseself-management,andhowIneededtochangemylifestyle.Mycasemanagershelpedmetobeproactive,positive,andfacemyhealthissues. JULY11,2016ISADAYIWILLNEVERFORGET. Ispentthemorningwithmycasemanager,selectingniceusedfurniture,gettinggroceriesandat2:00pm,IwalkedintomyDuPagePadsSupportiveHousingapartmentforthefirsttime. Thishomemeanseverythingtome.NowIamoninsulin,eatproperlyandseedoctorsregularly. IhavenodoubtthatwithoutDuPagePads,Iwouldnotbeheretoday.Becausemycasemanagersbelievedinme,Inowlookforwardtomanymoreyearsofahealthylifestyle.
