  15. Importance of WIL, turning all workplaces into a training space

  16. What is WIL? • Work Integrated Learning (WIL) is aligned to the to the vision of the White Paper on Post School Education and Training which was launched on 16 January 2014 by the Minister of Higher Education and Training. • The White Paper stresses the vital role of Technical and Vocational education with academic and Workplace Learning. • WIL refers to an educational approach that aligns academic and workplace practices for the mutual benefit of learners and workplaces. • This is in the form of for example: P1 and P2 experiential training, Work Based Learning, Internship and Graduate Programmes.

  17. Why is WIL important? • WIL prepares learners for the world of work and entrepreneurship • The WIL Programmes required by TVET colleges and Universities of Technology (e.g. engineering related studies) leads to the acquisition of a full qualification • Learnership and Artisan Programmes also requires experiential learning towards acquisition of a full qualification.

  18. How is WIL implemented? • SETAs are working in collaboration with TVETs, Universities of Technology, and Industry to ensure successful implementation of the WIL • WIL is implemented by integrating theoretical learning with the practical and work experience related to their field of study • It is an important aspect of career development whereby at CHIETA learners seeking opportunities are encouraged to register on CHIETA Skills Supply and Demand Database. For more information on the accessibility of this system please contact Mr Osborne Mkhize at omkhize@chieta.org.za

  19. Benefits of WIL Benefits to employers: • Having a talent pool of potential employees to recruit • Developing links with Higher Education Institutions and feeding into the curriculum • Creating a good image for the organisation by curbing the high unemployment rate Benefits to Learners: • Gain work experience through integration of theory and practical training • Improve the opportunity of obtaining employment • Developing ‘soft' skills such as communication, team working and report-writing skills
