2.1 The Particulate Nature of Matter • Chemistry is the study of matter • Matter has Mass & Volume • ALL Matter is composed of ATOMS
2.2 Elements and Compounds • Compounds – formed by 2 or more elements being bonded chemically Elements – composed of only one type of atom
2.4 Physical & Chemical Properties/Changes • Physical Property – describes measurable, physical attributes of the substance Ex. Density, odor, color, melting point, boiling point • Chemical Property – refers to the ability of substances to forms new substances Ex. Flammable, toxic, inert
2.4 Physical & Chemical Properties/Changes • Physical Change generally a phase change (substance will still have same chemical formula)
2.4 Physical & Chemical Properties/Changes Chemical Change bonds between atoms are broken and new bonds are firmed to create new substances with new chem/phys properties Indicators of a Chemical Change Color change Gas is produced Energy is released or absorbed Precipitate is formed
2.6 Separation of Mixtures • Distillation • Filtration • Chromatography
