Growing Credible Forest Certification in Asia Book Publishing Forum – October 21, 2010
FSC Forest Certification • A market-based tool to recognize and promote responsible forest management • An independent third party that evaluates forest management practices according to social, environmental & economic standards. • Certified wood is tracked every step of the way, from the forest to the retailer
FSC = Buying With Confidence The FSC logo, found on thousands of products, is a “seal of approval” for consumers and businesses to choose products supporting responsible forest management.
What Does “Responsibly Managed” Mean under FSC? Maintain ecological function and services Forests with high conservation values are protected No illegal logging No conversion of natural forests to plantations Chemical restrictions Wildlife habitat and species protected Tenure, land use and other rights of indigenous peoples protected Respect for social & economic forest workers & local communities
Chain of Custody Objective: ensure that FSC-certified material is tracked through the production and distribution process End consumers can have confidence there is a system in place to verify the source of the wood. 1. Forest management certification 2. Chain of custody certification 3. Product labeling
We work closely with our Commercial Partners5,000 US and Canadian companies committed to FSC certification; many more employing the symbol to demonstrate responsible sourcing
And we also work with NGOs FSC is the only forest certification system recognized and supported by North America’s leading environmental NGO’s; many are active members
US demand is pivotal to the viability and long term success of FSC system
And our land base is responding Acres in Millions

Key Challenges for FSC in Indonesia Gap between standard practices and FSC P&C Tenure issues and social conflict, concession requirements, law enforcement No national standard (operating on interim standards) Primary forest logging (sustainable harvest, roads, etc.) Impacts from adjacent developments (e.g. palm oil) Plantations and FSC’s conversion date limitation Policy of Association
Opportunities • Leverage US and European CSR demand, Lacey and FLEGT • Growing chain-of-custody base in China and Southeast Asia • FSC Principles and Criteria revision • Carbon valuation and certification • Stepwise approaches • Plantations on “degraded” lands (Brazil) • LEI collaboration • FSC General Assembly in Sabah, Malaysia
