  1. Short Introduction to MuTr at PHENIXBY AHMED AL-JAMELNEW MEXICO STATE UNIVERSITY2002

  2. Some of the MuTrians with some of the “MuIdrians Ahmed Al-Jamel 2002 MuTr Group

  3. MuTr at PHENIX • MuTr stands for Muon Tracking. • The MuTr subsystem has two arms: North and South. • Both arms are completely installed now. The North was recently installed, and will be used for the first time in RUN-03.

  4. S3 S2 S1 Interactionregion IR Components of Each arm • Each arm has three stations: [1]. Station 1 [2]. Station 2 [3]. Station 3

  5. A quadrant Station 1 • Station 1 is divided into four quadrants • Each quadrant has threegaps :gap1, gap2 , gap3 • Each gap consists of an anode plane sandwiched between two continuous cathode planes. • Thus in each quadrant, we have 6 cathode planes • --> 3 hit points (6 -coordinates) from Station 1.

  6. An octant from S2 Station 2, S2 • Station 2 is divided into 8 octants, or chambers. • Each octant has 3 gaps: gap 1, gap 2, gap 3. • Each gap consists of an anode plane sandwiched between two continuous cathode planes. • -----> 3 hit points from S2.

  7. Some octants of S-3 while they were comissioned in 905. Station 3, S3(The biggest) • Station 3 has 8 octants • Each octant has two gaps: Gap 1, Gap 3. • Each gap consists of an anode plane sandwiched between two cathode planes. • ----> 2 hit points .

  8. MuTr SubsystemsThese are the top MuTr operating systems:( PLEASE SEE THE STANDING ORDERS OR THE MUON HOMEPAGE TO LEARN MORE!)---------------------------------------------------------------- • High Voltage HV : ~ 1825-1850V on the anode wires. • Low Voltage LV : For the electronics and cameras. • Gas System: To mix and supply the gas to the chambers. • Front End Electronics FEM: To read the signals from the cathodes ----> DAQ. • Optical Alignment System OASys: To monitor the relative motions of the chambers ... • Others: water flow through hoses to keep the temperature of the FEMs low. Air tubing, to reduce the humidity. Also, and without doubt, the lamp shades (magnets)

  9. Voltage Currents High Voltage GUI • How to read from this GUI: Example: N341 means North, S3, Oct4, gap1.

  10. FEE boxes Cooling FEEs and cooling

  11. Cameras: 7 cameras per Octant Optical Alignment System

  12. Lamp Shades (magnets!) Other lamp shades to be installed here Scaffolding for the North

  13. Physics • Looking for peaks of j/psi from Dimuon analysis • Heavy Quark production via Single High Pt muons... • Others, of course, in the muon webpage.... P.S. This figure is borrowed from Raphael's muon software tutorial

  14. MuTr Standing Orders • The MuTr Standing orders are written as a guide to the people on shift during RUN-03. • Please visit: http://www.phenix.bnl.gov/phenix/WWW/run02/manual/orders/mutr/mutr_standing.html • Read them, and if you have a question, please feel free to ask the experts !.
