  2. Our aims of this presentation: • To introduce with Getlini Eko from Riga, Latvia • To share our educational experience • To show other possibilities of recycling for better future

  3. Getlini EKO – the central place for eco-education in Riga • It is high technology and environmentally friendly ecological waste management company since 1997 • They set an example in the production of green renewable energy • Also eco-friendly agriculture and environmental management

  4. A modern polygon for waste recycling – short history • In USSR times it used to be just a dump without any care of environment • There were no sorting, cutting up or compressing the waste • All dirty waters flew into Daugava river and the Baltic sea...

A modern polygon for waste recycling • Year 1997 – a foundtation of Getlini Eko • Involvement of Wold Bank’s credit, GEF (Global Environmental Facility) and Swedish International Development agency • Non-recyclable waste is deposited in environmentally safe biodegradable cells, which cannot be penetrated by either air or rainwater

  6. Added values in GetliniEko: • Energy • Landfill gas • Electricity (40% electricity, 46% heat)

  10. The tasks before visit: • 20 students split into 4 groups (by lottery method) • 1st group – to write a review • 2nd group – to make a PowerPoint presentation • 3rd group – to make a game about eco-issue • 4th group – to make a video about Getlini Eko

  11. Students’ ideas/stereotypes before: • There will be only big pile of trash... • Nothing interesting or useful to learn... • Awful smell... Stinky rubbish mountain... • New topic to me! Lots of homeless people and rats... • Very far in unknown direction out of Riga... • Some kind of dump...

  12. Students’ ideas/stereotypes before: • We will be taught how to sort trash • We will be guided through the trash mountain... • Unbearable smell  all around...

  13. Students’ impressions after: • A big, well organized polygon • They produce warmth

  14. Students’ impressions after: • I wasn’t expecting that well organized system where everything is planned and none of those made products weren’t forgotten! • I liked their solution for grass mowing by sheep 

  15. Students’ impressions after: • Very tasty tomatoes from greenhouse! • I did like the atmosphere in the conference room and we were serious • Now I will start thinking more serious about our tidiness...

  22. EcoBaltiaGroup • Eco Baltia Group is an enterprise which collects, recycles and reproduces plastic

  23. Bottle - flakes • Pet bottle is crushed and shredded into plastic flakes

  24. Flakes - granules • Plastic flakes are reproduced in plastic granules

  25. Export • 95% of produced plastic granules are being exported to China, Panama, Scandinavia e.t.c. • This enterprise is the biggest and most modern in east Europe • More than 45 000 clients in Latvia and abroad

  26. Divisionofgranules • Lower quality granules are made in plastic buckets and other containers • Clear granules are made in clear plastic bottles or saran wrap • White granules are made in polyster which is used for clothes manufacturing

  27. Conclusion • We are proud of possibilities to organise our waste in Latvia • We have talented, creative and hard-working students – our future • Lifeandthisprojectis really interesting experienceforall to learn
