Characteristics of School • Someone far removed from the student decides what and how he should learn • The goals are not salient (neither noticeable nor important) • The parent has little to no influence or decision-making power
Where’s it Found? • Public/government schools • Private schools • Charter schools • Alternative schools – Family School • On-line schools • Part-time schools • Homeschool support services • Homeschools
3 Reasons to Abandon the School Model • School ≠ Education • Goals are not salient (neither noticeable nor important – to you) • The parent has little to no influence or decision-making power.
School ≠ Education Reason #1
What is Education? “Education, n. [L. educatio] The bringing up of a child; instruction; formation of manners. Education comprehends all that series of instruction and discipline which is intended to enlighten the understanding, correct the temper, and form the manners and habits of youth, and fit them for usefulness in their future stations. To give children a good education in manners, arts and science, is important; to give them a religious education is indispensable; and an immense responsibility rests on parents and guardians who neglect these duties.” Noah Webster 1828
Two Latin Roots 1. Educare 2. Educere - “to draw out” Preparing a new generation for changes that are to come – readying them to create solutions to problems yet unknown Questioning, thinking, creating • –”to train or mold” • The preservation and passing down of knowledge and the shaping of youths in the image of their parents • Rote memorization and becoming good workers
Root of “School” • Greek – “Scholae” - leisure
A Proper Metaphor? Banking Gardening
What Others Say • “Education is not the filling of a pail but the lighting of a fire. Of such is wisdom” -William B. Yeats • “Don’t let your children’s schooling get in the way of their education” -Francis Shaeffer • “Schools have not necessarily much to do with education… they are mainly institutions of control where certain basic habits must be inclucated in the young. Education is quite different and has little place in school.” -Winston Churchill • “Education is what remains after one has forgotten what one has learned in school.” -Albert Einstein
Goal is not Salient Reason #2
What is Goal of Education? • Hebrew – lifelong obedience to Jehovah • Westminster Catechism – to glorify God and enjoy Him forever • To be a contributing member of society • To be a good citizen • From Psalm 34:11 “Come, you children, listen to me; and I will teach you the fear of the Lord.” – the goal of Christian education should be the student’s maturing recognition of and response to the Lordship of Jesus Christ Goal of School: College … i.e. more school
The Problem of College as the Goal • Not preparing our kids for the future • “The Degree is Dead” by Sergio Marrero TEDxPrincetonU • “College is Dead: How the Next Generation Will Educate Themselves” Isaac Morehouse Praxis • “College Grads make more money and have more opportunity” – post hoc fallacy
What they don’t tell you • Only 59% of college students get a degree after 6 years • (In New Mexico the 6-year College Completion Rate is only 41%) • Less than 25% of labor force has a college degree • 43% of college graduates are underemployed in first job and half of them are still underemployed 10 years later • Only 27 percent of college grads have a job related to their degree • There are more jobs available than there are unemployed for the first time in U.S. history
No Degree Required • Google • Penguin/Random House • Costco • Whole Foods • Hilton • Publix • Apple • Starbucks • Nordstrom • Home Depot • IBM • Bank of America • Chipotle • Lowe’s • Netflix • SpaceX • Tesla
Parent has no Decision-making Power Reason #3
Federal The Model of a School State School Board Administration Principal The Problem: The parent whom God’s word says is to be responsible for training has no influence. Professional Teacher Problem persists in charter schools, private schools, on-line schools, and part-time schools. Student Parent
Biblical Command • Proverbs 22:6 Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it. • Deuteronomy 6:6-7 – These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. • Proverbs 13:24 Whoever spares the rod hates their children but the one who loves their children is careful to discipline them.
A New Perspective • Parent as CEO • Ultimate authority • Responsible for overall success • Long-term strategies • Goal to increase value (steward) • Vision – Mission • Hire and evaluate others • Maintain awareness of landscape • Assess risks • Set goals
Changing Economy • Institutions/Organizations are giving way to networks • Three ways to organize • Bureaucracy • Markets • Network • Advantages of Network • Cost effective • Efficient • Access to shared resources (collaborative)
Historical Comparison Standard Oil • Third-party Sellers • Amazon Flex • Kindle Direct Publishing • AmazonInspire • merch@Amazon • PrimeVideo Direct
