The Kennedy Mystique • Youth, optimism, charisma, looks, and glamorous wife and family made him popular and inspired Americans • “Ask not what your country can do for you – ask what you can do for your country.” • 1st to televise live conferences
The New Frontier • Increase aid to education, help migrant workers, provide health insurance to elderly, and create a Dept. of Urban Affairs • Unsuccessful domestically • Successful economically and in increasing funds for defense and space exploration • Focused on social issues • Gender discrimination in the workplace • Civil Rights movement
The New Frontier • Supreme Court was led by Chief Justice Earl Warren • Lots of influence on: • civil rights mvmt. • Freedom of press • Separation of church and state • Rights of the accused
Kennedy’s Death • Shot twice in Dallas, Texas on November 22, 1963 • Lee Harvey Oswald accused • Killed 2 days later by Jack Ruby • Conspiracy theories • JFK’s successor, Lyndon Baines Johnson (LBJ), continued to promote social programs
LBJ’s Presidency • Texan, gruff, loud speaker, tall, not at all like JFK’s image • One of the most effective and powerful leaders in Senate history • Very persuasive • Between 1965-1968, 60 programs were passed
LBJ’s Presidency • Great Society- his vision of a more perfect and equitable society • War on Poverty- US seemed affluent, but in inner cities 50 million were poor • Medicare & Medicaid- health insurance programs
LBJ’s Presidency • Project Head Start- Volunteers in service to America (domestic Peace Corps) put young people to work • Upward Bound- College prep for low income teens • Dept of Housing and Urban Development-deal w/ deterioration of inner cities, Robert Weaver was 1st African American to serve in a cabinet
LBJ’s Presidency • Dept. of Transportation • Immigration Reform Act of 1965- limited # of immigrants yearly and eliminated National Origins so immigrants could come from any part of the world. • What remains today of Great Society?
