Reasons to Test a Multi-leveled Building Drinking Water System Distribution systems on each floor may have a different level of contamination due to frequent or minimal use. Hot water systems are not used as much as cold water systems which create stagnant areas for microbial growth. 2nd generation cATP(living biomass only) testing used as a screening tool can detect all forms of bacterial growth verses only culturing E. Coli and Total Coliforms. Legionella and other microorganisms are detected by ATP. This is also the case with “VBNC – Viable But Not Cultureable” bacteria not being found by standard culture testing.
Case History #2 – Source Water Evaluation Case Study – Building Water System • Because source water quality changes, it is useful to track ratio of sample-to-source to determine areas requiring maintenance (e.g. flushing, disinfection). 3
Case History #2 – Source Water Evaluation Case Study – Pathogen Outbreak • Results from a 2007 audit of a healthcare distribution system. • System had discovered presence of Pseudomonas ag. bacteria in 2 locations days prior to audit. 4
Case History #2 – Source Water Evaluation Case Study – Pathogen Outbreak • ATP monitoring determined that contamination was localized and resulted from significant build-up. • Routine monitoring in any distribution system is a preventive tool. 5
