Be on the watch for: An injury that doesn’t heal or becomes infected Any part of your footor leg that turns blue or black Pain when walking that is relieved by rest Reduced sensation to pain or extreme temperatures Any unusual coldness, numbness, tingling or discomfort in your feet Is This Normal? Yes…No…Maybe So

  6. If this is a problem for you… make sure you: Pamper your feet: due to risk of ulcers & infection Sores may take longer to heal Diabetes & Poor Circulation

  7. Diabetic Foot • Seniors with diabetes have difficulty feeling extreme heat or cold … therefore: • Heating pads & hot water bottles are a NO..NO..

  8. More Tips to Live By • Avoid crossing legs or ankles while sitting • Chilling decreases circulation… therefore dress warmly • Avoid tight socks, stockings & shoes, since these decrease circulation • Caution! Sign of poor circulation… blue or purplish skin color

  9. Plantar Warts Cause: • A virus that enters skin at pressure point or where foot has been injured • Is round & has a crater in the centre • Often mistaken for callus

  10. Plantar Warts Treatment: • Warts are NOT a do it yourself project • Consult a professional for this problem • Methods may include: medication, padding, surgery

  11. Corns & Calluses Causes: • Poorly fitting shoes • Tight socks • Generally form on bottom of foot • Faulty weight bearing Treatment:Pumice stone,100 grit sandpaper followed by moisturizer Caution: Avoid using: corn remedies, razor blades,treatments containing acids

  12. Hammertoes Causes: • Muscle imbalance • Possibly inherited • Shoes that are too short causing smaller toes to buckle. • Corns form where toes rub on shoes Treatment:Pads, proper shoes with deep toe box & wider fit

  13. Bunions Causes: • Occurs when big toe angles inward toward the second toe • Tends to be hereditary • Aggravated by wearing tight shoes when young Treatment:(1) Shields, (2) pads to relieve the pain (3) Soaks in Epsom salts (4) Bunion area of shoe can be stretched. (5) Surgery

Heel Pain Possible causes: (1) Ligament tear ( due to old worn out heels & heavy walking) Treatment: plastic heel cup,Cortisone injection,arch supports (2) Cracked heels ( due to excessively thick skin) Treatment:Rub heels with pumice or 100 grit sandpaper, followed by moisturizer & clean socks

  15. Basic Foot Care • Follow these rules: • Wash/soak feet every day • Pat dry..don’t rub especially between toes • Do NOT soak longer than 10 minutes • Cut nails straight across

Examine feet daily for dryness, breaks in skin, calluses etc. Use lanolin moisturizing cream for dry cracked skin If feet perspire, use talcum powder Change socks daily Walk when ever you can (even around the house counts) Seek medical attention if you notice any abnormality that does not go away.
