About the CWTA • The Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association is the authority on wireless telecommunications issues in Canada • The association represents over 200 wireless service providers, equipment manufacturers and other suppliers • Main role is advocacy: champion the interests of more than 17 million Canadians who use wireless services for convenience, productivity and security

  3. CWTA Core Activities • Business Development for SMEs • 80 % of the industry = SMEs • Facilitate member participation at major international trade shows • Industry conferences and regional events • Short Code Administrator • All Canadian short codes go through CWTA • Canadians sent 4.3 billion text messages in 2006

CWTA Core Activities • Public Awareness on Wireless Issues • Focus on Driving/ La route d’abord: • Encourage Canadians to use wireless devices responsibly while on the road • New PSA, targeted website: www.focusondriving.ca (www.laroutedabord.ca) • Wireless Health Issues:www.rf-com.ca • Bring industry together on key issues • Wireless Number Portability (WNP) • Agreement on inter-carrier SMS and MMS

Some Quick Industry Facts • 64 % Canadian households have a wireless phone: a 20 % increase since 2000! • Over 90% of Canadians have a choice of 3 carriers in their community • April 2006: 4.8 % of Canadians use only wireless, up from 1.9% in 2004 • 47 % of all phone connections are wireless • 7.7% of low income households • Text Messages: over 18 million per day – triple that of last year. This is direct person to person!

TXT.ca Canada’s Short Code Administrator • CWTA runs Canada’s short code administrator. • Short Codes • 5- or 6-digit numbers (often spell a word or brand name) • Considered ‘Common’ Short Codes when activated on 2 or more carrier networks. • Are the foundation of mobile marketing offering endless opportunities to interact with mobile subscribers. • More than 700 Common Short Codes have been activated in Canada since July 2003. Eg: Globe and Mail; CBC; Shoppers Drug Mart

Program for Export Market Development As a national association, CWTA is able to participate in the Department of Foreign Affairs Program for Export Market Development • Funds association and members’ international activities • CTIA Wireless 2007 subsidized booth space • mission to Netherlands

  9. Spectrum Auction • New spectrum for advanced wireless services in the 2 GHz range • Will open door to new applications that require high speeds: • Business applications • Video • Data

WiFi/Cellular Convergence • Convergence between wifi and cellular networks means: • New opportunities for handsets and network build • New applications and technologies • Location-based services (RFID, GPS) • Will see a large opportunity for public sector service delivery: parking; home heating; public safety and security

Data and Content • Data services today: over $1 billion in revenue (1/10) annual • Music: Ring-tones • New and innovative Canadian content offerings: • Trudeau airport first to offer flight information via text message • Video: Bell has launched full length movies • Mobile Gaming: Nokia’s global gaming division is in Canada • Mobile TV: recent CRTC decision means the industry can roll out further services

Wireless Number Portability • WNP: An industry initiative • As of March 14 full inter-modal WNP will be available • Fastest global implementation at 18 months • Industry chose an ambitious full national launch • Will mean customer experience is more important than ever, as carriers look to offer the best customer services and experience
