Sympathy for the Devil By: Ricardo Frias Philosophy Ms. Dickson
SympathyfortheDevil • Sympathy for the Devil: Instance of a broader paradox ( How a viewer can be sympathetic toward a fictional character). • Example: Tony Soprano is a really bad person, corrupted drug dealer , gangster, etc. If he were and habitant of our world, we would hate him and want him death. But as he is not from the actual life, we engender our sympathy or we have a pro attitude towards him.
It Was Fascination • It would be a mistake to regard this kind of interest as a matter of caring Tony Soprano. It is more like being bewitched by him. • Even if we are fascinated by Tony, does not prelude that we also have a pro-attitude toward him.
Wish fulfillment • Tony fulfills our darkest wishes. • Our sympathy for Soprano is nothing but our egoistical love of our own egoism.
Identification • Tony must be different from us in order to satisfy our wishes. • Many of us can recognize our own lives in Tony´s
Paradox Solved • Tony does posses some positive moral characteristics. • People we estimate the most moral are the ones who are the safest to interact wth.
A Remaining Problem • The sympathy we have for Soprano contributes to the very salutary moral message that the series promotes.
