TFTR D&D ALARA PLANFY00 thru FY02 December 3, 1999 Presented By: James H. Chrzanowski
TFTR D&D ALARA PLAN • This presentation will review for the ALARA committee those D&D activities being planned for the three year plan, including: • Assumptions made in determining dose estimates • General task descriptions • Estimated personnel exposure for each D&D task • Controls which will be used • The safety and protection of the work force will be the primary concern during the D&D Removals • Integrated Safety Management (ISM)
TFTR D&D ALARA PLAN • The TFTR D&D Project Mission is to: • Surgically remove items which can be re-used within the DOE complex • Remove Tritium contaminated and activated systems for disposal • Clear the Test Cell of hardware except for the Neutral Beams and their sources • Reclassify the D-site complex as a non-nuclear facility as defined in DOE Order 420.1 (“Facility Safety”) • Provide data on the D&D of a large magnetic fusion facility
TFTR D&D ALARA PLAN • How dose estimates were developed: • Dose rates based upon surveys performed this Summer and Fall. • Man-hours were based upon estimates developed by engineering for the D&D Project • Estimates were conservative • No credit was taken for the use of shielding, even though shielding will be used wherever possible • Activities whose estimated dose were less < 1.0 mrem were discounted from totals
TFTR D&D ALARA PLAN • SURVEY DATA • - Top of umbrella structure • 0.8-1.0 mrem/hr. • - Midplane adjacent to TF coil • 5.0 mrem/hr. • - At edge of 102-ft. elevation • 0.8 mrem/hr. • - Vacuum Vessel on contact • 25-35 mrem/hr. • - At yellow fence • 0.16 mrem/hr.
TFTR D&D ALARA PLAN Sample Dose Estimating Table Man-hours to complete task Dose-Rate/Hour Primavera Activity No.
TFTR D&D ALARA PLAN • Steps Taken to Minimize Exposure • Experienced personnel will be used for critical tasks such as vacuum interface/line breaks • Lead shielding will be used whenever possible • Disassembly sequence • Special tools • Pre-job Briefings • Post-job Briefings
TFTR D&D ALARA PLAN • Contamination Issues • Personnel shall wear protective clothing/equipment as determined by Health Physics • Elephant trunks, gloveboxes, etc. shall be used to contain airborne contamination • Each procedure requires HP to survey/smear area prior to starting work to determine working condition
TFTR D&D ALARA PLAN • FY BREAKDOWN • FY00 -Area preparation, initial diagnostic removals, Tokamak removals on top of umbrella structure • Minimal expected personnel dose • FY01- Majority of Diagnostic line breaks, pump duct removals, vacuum vessel entry, start of contaminated basement vacuum line removals, prep and concrete fill VV • Highest expected personnel dose • FY02 – Umbrella structure removal, Diamond cutting of VV and close vessel work • Reasonably high personnel dose
TFTR D&D ALARA PLAN • PROJECTED DOSE SUMMARY • (Conservative estimates)R1 • FY00 …………………. 4.1 Rem • FY01 …………………. 13.9 Rem • FY02 …………………. 6.6 Rem • D&D Projected Total= 24.6 Rem
TFTR D&D ALARA PLAN • ESTIMATED DOSE COMPARISON • D&D Project……………………….. 24.6 Rem • 1996 TFTR Outage (requested) ….. 13.7 Rem • 1996 TFTR Outage (actual) ………. 5.05 Rem • (internal & external values)
