PAUL‘S PRAYER:COMPLETESANCTIFICATION. ”AND THE VERY GOD OF PEACE SANCTIFY YOU WHOLLY; AND I PRAY GOD YOURWHOLE SPIRIT AND SOUL AND BODY BE PRESERVED BLAMELESS UNTO THE COMING (RAPTURE) OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST. “ (5:23) • SANCTIFICATION -- THE MOMENT-BY-MOMENT, SPIRITUAL PROCESS BY WHICH GOD SETS US APART FROM SIN UNTO HOLINESS. • PAUL’S PRAYER GIVES US A NUMBER OF ESSENTIAL PRINCIPAL’S TO REMEMBER: • NEGATIVE AND POSITIVE ASPECTS. • NEGATIVELY, IT INVOLVES THE PURGING OUT OF SIN. “KNOWING THIS, THAT OUR OLD MAN IS CRUCIFIED WITH HIM, THAT THE BODY OF SIN MIGHT BE DESTROYED, THAT HENCEFORTH WE SHOULD NOT SERVE SIN. “ (ROM. 6:6) “AND, LET EVERY ONE THAT NAMETH THE NAME OF CHRIST DEPART FROM INIQUITY.” (2TIM. 2:19b)
SCRIPTURE COMPARES SIN TO LEAVEN. “THEN UNDERSTOOD THEY HOW THAT HE BADE THEM NOT BEWARE OF THE LEAVEN OF BREAD, BUT OF THE DOCTRINE OF THE PHARISEES AND OF THE SADDUCEES. “ (MATT. 16:12) “. . . . . . . . KNOW YE NOT THAT A LITTLE LEAVEN LEAVENETH THE WHOLE LUMP? PURGE OUT THEREFORE THE OLD LEAVEN, THAT YE MAY BE A NEW LUMP, AS YE ARE UNLEAVENED. FOR EVEN CHRIST OUR PASSOVER IS SACRIFICED FOR US: “ (1COR. 5:6-8) • SANCTIFICATION DOES NOT REMOVE SIN; BUT PURGES US FROM THE LOVE FOR SIN AND ITS FREQUENCY IN OUR LIVES. “ BUT NOW BEING MADE FREE FROM SIN, AND BECOME SERVANTS TO GOD, YE HAVE YOUR FRUIT UNTO HOLINESS, AND THE END EVERLASTING LIFE. “(ROM. 6:22)
“ BRETHREN, I COUNT NOT MYSELF TO HAVE APPREHENDED: BUT THIS ONE THING I DO, FORGETTING THOSE THINGS WHICH ARE BEHIND, AND REACHING FORTH UNTO THOSE THINGS WHICH ARE BEFORE, I PRESS TOWARD THE MARK FOR THE PRIZE OF THE HIGH CALLING OF GOD IN CHRIST JESUS.” (PHIL. 3:23-14) “FOR THE GRACE OF GOD THAT BRINGETH SALVATION HATH APPEARED TO ALL MEN, TEACHING US THAT, DENYING UNGODLINESS AND WORLDLY LUSTS, WE SHOULD LIVE SOBERLY, RIGHTEOUSLY, AND GODLY, IN THIS PRESENT WORLD;” (TITUS 2:11-12) • POSITIVELY, SANCTIFICATION INVOLVES THE RENEWING OF THE MIND. “AND BE NOT CONFORMED TO THIS WORLD: BUT BE YE TRANSFORMED BY THE RENEWING OF YOUR MIND, THAT YE MAY PROVE WHAT IS THAT GOOD, AND ACCEPTABLE, AND PERFECT, WILL OF GOD. “(ROM. 12:2)
IT ALSO INVOLVES THE PUTTING ON OF CHRISTLIKENESS. “LET THE WORD OF CHRIST DWELL IN YOU RICHLY IN ALL WISDOM; TEACHING AND ADMONISHING ONE ANOTHER IN PSALMS AND HYMNS AND SPIRITUAL SONGS, SINGING WITH GRACE IN YOUR HEARTS TO THE LORD. AND WHATSOEVER YE DO IN WORD OR DEED, DO ALL IN THE NAME OF THE LORD JESUS, GIVING THANKS TO GOD AND THE FATHER BY HIM. “ (COL. 3:16-17) • THESE NEGATIVE/POSITIVE CHANGES OCCUR AS THE HOLY SPIRIT CONTINUALLY USES GOD’S WORD IN OUR LIVES. “SANCTIFY THEM THROUGH THY TRUTH: THY WORD IS TRUTH. “ (JOHN 17:17) “ALL SCRIPTURE IS GIVEN BY INSPIRATION OF GOD, AND IS PROFITABLE FOR DOCTRINE, FOR REPROOF, FOR CORRECTION, FOR INSTRUCTION IN RIGHTEOUSNESS: THAT THE MAN OF GOD MAY BE PERFECT, THROUGHLY FURNISHED UNTO ALL GOOD WORKS. (2 TIM. 3:16-17)
SANCTIFICATION OCCURS CHIEFLY IN OUR HEART, OUR MIND, OUR INNER BEING – IT IS NOT CONCERNED WITH CHANGING OUR OUTWARD BEHAVIOR. “THEREFORE BEING JUSTIFIED BY FAITH, WE HAVE PEACE WITH GOD THROUGH OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST: BY WHOM ALSO WE HAVE ACCESS BY FAITH INTO THIS GRACE WHEREIN WE STAND, AND REJOICE IN HOPE OF THE GLORY OF GOD. “ (ROM. 5:1-2) • NOR LIMITING OUR ATTITUDES AND ACTIONS TO AN ARBITRARY CODE. ”FOR THE KINGDOM OF GOD IS NOT MEAT AND DRINK; BUT RIGHTEOUSNESS, AND PEACE, AND JOY IN THE HOLY GHOST.“ (ROM. 14:17) “LET NO MAN THEREFORE JUDGE YOU IN MEAT, OR IN DRINK, OR IN RESPECT OF AN HOLYDAY, OR OF THE NEW MOON, OR OF THE SABBATH DAYS: (TOUCH NOT; TASTE NOT; HANDLE NOT; WHICH ALL ARE TO PERISH WITH THE USING;) AFTER THE COMMANDMENTS AND DOCTRINES OF MEN? WHICH THINGS HAVE INDEED A SHEW OF WISDOM IN WILL WORSHIP, AND HUMILITY, AND NEGLECTING OF THE BODY; NOT IN ANY HONOUR TO THE SATISFYING OF THE FLESH. “ (COL. 2:16-23)
SANCTIFICATION IS PRIMARILY AN INWARD GRACE, BUT IT DOES AFFECT A CHRISTIAN’S OUTWARD ACTIONS. ”WHOSE ADORNING LET IT NOT BE THAT OUTWARD ADORNING OF PLAITING THE HAIR, AND OF WEARING OF GOLD, OR OF PUTTING ON OF APPAREL; BUT LET IT BE THE HIDDEN MAN OF THE HEART, IN THAT WHICH IS NOT CORRUPTIBLE, EVEN THE ORNAMENT OF A MEEK AND QUIET SPIRIT, WHICH IS IN THE SIGHT OF GOD OF GREAT PRICE. “ (1PET. 3:3-4) • THE BIBLE ALWAYS REFERS TO SANCTIFICATION AS A BEAUTIFUL REALITY. ” THY PEOPLE SHALL BE WILLING IN THE DAY OF THY POWER, IN THE BEAUTIES OF HOLINESS FROM THE WOMB OF THE MORNING: THOU HAST THE DEW OF THY YOUTH. “ (PS. 110:3)
