  3. Disruptive Technology • Defined as new technologies which contribute significantly in the ways of doing business. • This hinders competition and can force other firms out of the market system. • For example, the UBER taxi threatens the traditional ways of doing business in the taxi industry.

  4. Arguments against disruptive transport technologies • Increase in unemployment • Less consumption • Decrease in economic growth • Can be hacked

  5. Is South and Southern Africa ready? • South and Southern African countries are not ready • Insufficient resources for generating more or enough electricity • Lack of funds • Few right and skilled workforce

  6. Recommendations • Inventing engines that consumes less fuel • Car sharing and multi-modal solutions • Capacity • Locating • Pricing

  7. Conclusion • Technology is subject to changes, challenges, uncertainties and constraints. • Modes of transport that cater for individuals living in rural areas are important. • It improves social and financial activities in rural areas.
