Processing of Tungsten-2wt% Iron for Use in Kinetic Energy Penetrators Matt Hiser, Luke Golladay, Eric Miller Advisor: Dr. Aning The goal of this project is to assess the effect of heat treatment on Tungsten-2wt% Iron. This material could be used to replace depleted Uranium in kinetic energy penetrators. To feasibly make the penetrators the mechanically alloyed powder will have to be sintered, which we are approximating via heat treatment in an oven. By determining the properties at various times and temperatures we will determine at what temperatures sintering is feasible. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/4/48/M900.jpg. • Key Features: • 8 times and 3 temperatures tested for a total of 24 data points. • Temperatures selected to correspond to plausible sintering temperatures. • Microhardness, optical microscopy and XRD done on all samples for characterization. • SEM and TEM done on selected samples for a more precise look at composition and structure. • Collected data should indicate at what times and temperatures sintering will not be possible without degradation of important properties.
