  1. Validation of Satellite Rainfall Products over South America Tufa Dinku1 and Franklyn Ruiz2 tufa@iri.columbia.edu • International Research Institute for Climate and Society (IRI) The Earth Institute at Columbia University 2.IDEAM, Bogotá, Colombia. International Research Institute for Climate and Society (IRI) The Earth Institute at Columbia University International Research Institute for Climate and Society

  2. Outline • Motivation • Validation region and data • Validation of monthly products • Validations of daily products • Summary International Research Institute for Climate and Society

  3. Motivation: The IRI Data Libraryhttp://iridl.ldeo.columbia.edu/index.html Over 300 datasets providing a thorough image of Earth’s past, present, and near-future climate Air-SeaInterface Topographic and Land Characteristics Historical ModelSimulations Hydrology Atmosphere Radiation Budget Atmospheric Indices Oceanography Seasonal Forecasts International Research Institute for Climate and Society

  4. Motivation: Data Libraryhttp://iridl.ldeo.columbia.edu/index.html • The data sets in the Data Library includes many operation/semi-operational satellite rainfall products • Allows users to extract data for specific time/space domain and download it in different formats • Enables some basic statistical manipulations and downloading the results • IRI uses these products for different projects over different parts of the world, and also helps partners in developing countries to use the data • Thus, we have great interest in understanding the quality of these products International Research Institute for Climate and Society

  5. Validation over different regions Current validation regions • Ethiopia: Validation at spatial and temporal, scales • Desert locust recession regions : Validation at daily time scale and spatial resolution of 0.25-deg. • Zimbabwe: validation at of 0.25-deg • Madagascar: Validation different temporal and spatial scales • Columbia: Validation at different temporal and spatial scales International Research Institute for Climate and Society

  6. Validation over Columbia International Research Institute for Climate and Society

  7. Columbia International Research Institute for Climate and Society

  8. Rainfall climatology(Source: Climate Atlas of Colombia) International Research Institute for Climate and Society

  9. Raingauge data • Over 500 station obtained from Columbia Met. Service • About 300 used after quality control • Daily: 2003-2005 • Monthly: 1981-2005 • used: 1998-2005 • Minimum 20 gauges (up to 60) per 2.5-deg grid • One gauges per 0.25 deg grid International Research Institute for Climate and Society

  10. Validation of monthly products @ 2.5o International Research Institute for Climate and Society

  11. Monthly @ 2.5-deg: All data International Research Institute for Climate and Society

  12. Monthly @ 2.5-deg: Western Columbia International Research Institute for Climate and Society

  13. Monthly @ 2.5-deg: Eastern Colombia International Research Institute for Climate and Society

  14. Daily at 0.25 degree International Research Institute for Climate and Society

  15. Daily accumulation @ 0.25-deg International Research Institute for Climate and Society

  16. Hourly accumulation @ 0.25-deg International Research Institute for Climate and Society

  17. Summary • Validation over region of complex topography and VERY high spatial rainfall variability • The performance of the products is poorer than what have been observed over another complex terrain. • Poorer performance over western (wetter) part as compared to the eastern parts • TRMM products seem to do relatively better at both time/space scales International Research Institute for Climate and Society
