Luke 4:31–6:11 The Miraculous Jesus Jesus confronts one of the most imperative foundations of Judaism: Laws of Judaism & The Sabbath
Healings in Luke 4 & 5 • Cure of a Demoniac (Lk 4:31-37) • Cure of Simon’s Mother-in-law (Lk 4:38-39) • Cleansing of a Leper (Lk 5:12-16) • Healing of a Paralytic (Lk 5:17-26) • Most importantly, these occurrences represent Jesus’ divinity through his healing powers during his journeys around Galilee.
Cleansing of the Leper Lk 5:12-16 (esp. 13-14) After Jesus heals the leper, he still follows Jewish Law, sending the man to the high priest. OT Laws about Leprosy Lev 13–14 (esp. 13:2-3) Law states that anyone who has signs of leprosy should be immediately brought to a priest. The Healing of the Paralytic (Lk 5:17-26)Jesus follows the Sacred Law Most importantly, this passage shows that Jesus willingly obeys this specific facet of Jewish Law
Debates about the Sabbath Lk 6:1-5 Lk 6:6-11 “The Son of Man is lord of the Sabbath” (Lk 6:5) Sabbath rules in the O.T. Gen 2:1-3 Ex 20:8-11 Ex 31:12-17(esp.14-15) Ex 35:1-3 Lev 23:1-3 Jesus and the Sabbath
Jesus’ Relationship to Jewish Law • Healing of Paralytic = Jesus strictly follows Jewish law • HOWEVER • Jesus’ actions during the Sabbath = Jesus’ new teachings and laws concerning activities • The collection of grain for Jesus’ disciples and healing of the man during the Sabbath REPRESENT ONE THING: • Jesus breaks Sabbath law to show that satisfying human needs such as hunger and performing works of mercy take precedent over the sacred Sabbath laws outlined in many biblical passages.
