  1. An Introduction Angles Created By: Philip Knieriemen pknierie@mccsc.edu

  2. Lesson Objective • Students will understand what an angle is, how to measure angles, and classification of angles based on their measure. • Estimated Time: 30 min • Common Core: HSG-CO.A.1

  3. Let’s Review • Geometric “Elements” • Points • Lines • Rays • Segments A B A B A B A

  4. What do you know about Angles? Use words and/or diagrams to share anything you know about angles.

  5. ANGLE • An angle is formed by two rays starting from the same point. The point the rays both start from is the vertex. The rays that form the angle are referred to as the sidesof the angle.

  6. Naming an Angle There are three common ways of naming an angle. • By the Vertex point (if there is only one angle at the vertex. • Using a point on one side, then the vertex point, then a point on the other side. • Using a number. B 1 A C

  7. Quick Check #1 • Which is NOT a correct way of naming the angle shown? F 1 G H

  8. Measuring an Angle Angles are often measured in degrees using a tool called a protractor. • The vertex is lined up with the mark on the bottom middle of the protractor. • The “0” on the protractor is aligned with one side of the angle • Where the other side crosses on the protractor gives the measure of the angle. Symbol for degrees A The m is short for “measure of”

  9. Types of Angles Angles can be classified based on their measure. Acute Angles Angles between 0 and 90 degrees.

  10. Types of Angles Angles can be classified based on their measure. Right Angles Angles that are exactly 90 degrees.

  11. Types of Angles Angles can be classified based on their measure. Obtuse Angles Angles between 90 and 180 degrees.

  12. Types of Angles Angles can be classified based on their measure. Straight Angles Angles that are exactly 180 degrees.

  13. Quick Check #2 Match each angle with the correct classification: Acute Right Obtuse Straight

  14. Lesson Summary • Angles are formed by two rays starting from the same point. • The point is the vertex, and the rays are the sides of the angle. • Angles are often measured in degrees. • Types of angles include acute, right, obtuse and straight.

  15. Which is NOT a correct name of the angle R Q S

  16. What is the measure of the angle?
