Approximately 2,900 undergrads and grads (headcount); another 2,500 through Extended Studies • Colorado’s first Hispanic Serving Institution – nearly 30% of students identified as Hispanic • Situated in the most geographically isolated and economically challenged region in the state • Historically, Colorado’s low-cost 4-year college ASC Institutional ASC Overview

ASC FY 09-10 GF cut of $1.5M (12.3%) • Backfilled by stimulus dollars • 9% undergraduate tuition increase as approved by the state • Significant graduate tuition increase • Selective fee increases • Course Specific fees • Capital Fee (passed 2008) • Headcount increase of nearly 17% this semester FY 09-10 Budget

  6. No layoffs - $1.5M of administrative and faculty positions frozen • Recognition we must generate new revenue streams to meet 2012 funding cliff • New academic programs • New athletic programs • Facility construction and modernization Institutional Response

  7. Have historically run lean – only general fund IT increases since 2004 due to maintenance-related inflation or legal issues • Revenue growth has come from student technology fee – increased in 2007 to $15.40 per hour up to 11 credit hour Recession impact on IT

  8. Major impact is inability to fill an open position and to hire a desperately needed network engineer and desktop technician • Including CIO, 18.5 IT personnel • Have funds to complete campus switch upgrade and wireless implementation but lack manpower to do it Recession impact on IT (Cont.)

  9. Very careful about accepting new tasks or pursuing new capabilities – always a late adapter (business as usual) • Exploit the use of open source or free products • Linux, Google Apps, project mgmt • Student email to gmail IT response to recession

  10. Outsource where it makes sense (and where cost can be shared by others) • WebCT • Streaming Server • Purchase products that improve our efficiency • SCCM, Bradford, Kaspersky • System monitoring and reporting tools coupled with smart phones for system administrators IT response to recession
