-The Erie canal is 363 miles long. -It was originally built with 83 locks. -It cost $7,143,789 to build this canal. Fact number two.
Third fact In the year the canal opened: 2,000 boats 9,000 horses 8,000 men were all hired to transport on the canal.
Although later competition from the railroad the canal was still a great success in transportation.
Fact four. This canal was made to decrease the cost of shipping cargo. Before the canal was made cargo cost between $90-125 per ton but by 1835 the cost decreased to only $4 per ton.
