  2. Amputation • An amputation usually refers to the removal of the whole or part of an arm/hand or a leg/foot. Either by surgery or accident. • Congenital amputation: is being born without a limb. • Acquired amputation: is having a limb removed by surgery or accident.

  3. Causes • Trauma/accident -from factory, farm, or power tool accidents or from motor vehicle accidents, natural disasters, war, and terrorist attacks • Poor circulation - such as blood vessel disease ( Peripheral Vascular Disease), Diabetes or Blood Clots • Chronic infection - such as Osteomyelitis (an infection in the bones) • Tumors • Paralysis • Surgery • Deformity • Congenital limb deficiency

Cognitive • The loss of body parts can cause rise in grief because of body image or function • Phantom pain is pain that feels like it's coming from a body part that's no longer there • If the amputation is caused by any accident there could be a traumatic brain injure that can occur at the same time • These issues are not as bad with younger people or with people that were born with the amputation. This is also greatly affected by the persons personality

  5. Social • Self-esteem issues body issues not being able to do some thing as well • Think people don’t like them anymore because of limb loss • People look at them differently because of limb loss

  6. Motor • Vary tremendously depending on limb involved and how much of the limb that was removed. • Lower limb amputation causes gait issues

  7. How is Physical Fitness Impacted • Body temp control because of loss of surface area • Weight issues because of lower need for basic nutrients • Upper body amputees have fewer issues with physical fitness because of health lower limbs • Lower body amputees tend to have more issues with physical activity because of problems with movement • This is where prosthetics come in to play
