Dartmouth High School Climate Change
Introduction Climate Change is the regional change in temperature and weather patterns. It is sometimes referred to as Global Warming, and it is the process by which human emissions of Greenhouse Gases are believed to be causing changes in the Earth’s climate system.
Causes • Asteroids • Volcanoes • Greenhouse Gases • (e.g. C02 and Methane) • Burning of fossil fuels • Industrial pollutants • Aerosols
Effects • Melting ice caps • Asthma levels increasing • Damages to the ozone layer • Sea levels will rise • Pollen count will rise, resulting in severe cases of hay fever. • Climate change • Summer rains in southern Europe could become less. • Fresh water could become contaminated.
Carbon Offsetting The Great Carbon Con? Carbon offsetting is billed as the latest initiative to help save the planet, but is it just a conscience-salver? What is Carbon Offsetting? Carbon offsetting means paying someone to reduce atmospheric CO2 by the same amount your activities add. How Does It Work? When offsetting started, it was all about reforestation, but now Climate Care have started focusing on energy-efficient stoves and solar power(renewable energy).
Why has carbon offsetting come under fire? Many critics of carbon offsetting critics argue that people should reduce their air travel, not compensate for the C02 once it’s already in the atmosphere. In addition, there is also criticism of the offsetting industry’s lack of accountability – once you pay them £10 you don’t know where the money goes. So, should you offset? Offsetting a flight will fund energy-efficient homes and research into energy sources that don’t destroy the environment. However, carbon offsetting should never be an excuse for polluting more than you need have to. You should reduce your carbon emissions and offset the rest.
The Top 20 Carbon Dioxide Emitters • China • USA • Russia • India • Japan • Germany • Brazil • Canada • UK • Italy • South Korea • France • Mexico • Indonesia • Australia • Ukraine • South Africa • Iran • Spain • Poland
What Can You Do? • Use an energy-saving light bulb – CFL’s • Drive a hybrid or a fuel-efficient car/drive 15miles less every week. • Recycle more • Use less hot water • Avoid products with a lot of packaging • Buy a new thermostat • Adjust your thermostat; down 3 degrees in the winter and up 3 degrees in the summer. • Plant a tree • Turn off electrical appliances and don’t put them on standby. • Replace a worn out refrigerator with an energy star model • Keep your tyres filled with air.
